Olsen
Diverse selection of midcentury ranch and split-level homes
With most of the housing stock built between the 1950s and 1960s, most of the architectural styles match the period. Ranch, cottages and split-level homes range from about 1,000 to 3,000 square feet and sit on respectable-sized manicured lots with scattered trees. “Homes in the neighborhood are a little bit older, but they were originally custom built and aren’t cookie-cutter houses,” says Chancy Via, a Realtor and owner of Palo Duro Real Estate, who has sold homes in the area. Most homes sell between $225,000 and $390,000, but some large homes can exceed $500,000. “The market speed is based on the price point, but sometimes it is a little slower because the house may need a little work,” Via says. Olsen is home to multiple places of worship of varying denominations, including Saint Paul Methodist, Trinity Lutheran, Olsen Park Church of Christ and Temple B’nai Israel.Three A-minus rated schools in the Amarillo ISD
Olsen is part of the Amarillo Independent School District, which rates as an A-minus on Niche and has about 30,000 students. The district has long offered school choice opportunities. The program allows families to choose the best campus that fits their students, even if it differs from the assigned neighborhood school. Children attend three A-minus-rated schools - Olsen Park Elementary, which some can walk to, Crockett Middle and Amarillo High. The high school offers an International Baccalaureate Program and is known for its fine arts clubs, such as band and choir, as well as its athletic programs.Staying active at Olsen School Park
Adjacent to Olsen Park Elementary is the Olsen School Park, which doubles as recess equipment for the school and a park for neighbors. The open green space is encircled by a paved walking path, a playground and field where children can frolic, and hard-surfaced basketball and tennis courts for a friendly pick-up game. Similarly, residents who live closer to Crocket Middle School can take advantage of the sports field next to the school, including a recently redone turf football field. Olsen does have a handful of bike lanes, including one on Olsen Boulevard and paths that cut through the neighborhood on Harmony Street and Teckla Boulevard.Big box stores surrounding Westgate Mall
Multiple shopping centers offer an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Burlington Coat Factory on the neighborhood's northeast and southwest ends. Less than 3 miles away is the Westgate Mall, which has over 100 storefronts, including Dillard’s. The same area is littered with numerous big box stores, from the Home Depot to Sam’s Club and a nearby Target, which has a combined grocery store. For a casual night out, Blue Sky is a Texas chain with a nearby location known for its burgers and hand-cut fries. Set in a little red house, Tyler’s Barbeque was named one of the 50-best barbeque spots in the state by Texas Monthly.Fourth of July Bike Parade
“Olsen is a very active community, but nothing is formal like an HOA. A lot of the community events revolve around Olsen Park Elementary School and its park,” Via says. One of the larger events is the annual Fourth of July Parade. Children donned in red, white and blue march or bike down the streets before a cookout at Olsen School Park.Easy access to Interstate 40
Olsen is just south of Interstate 40, a cross-country highway that runs east to west from California to North Carolina. It’s how commuters can get the 6 miles northeast to downtown. However, being close to I-40 causes the noise level to rate as active, with it being loudest on the outer parts of the neighborhood. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport is about 12 miles east of I-40. Amarillo does have the ACTransit bus service, but the closest stop is at the Crunch Fitness, about 2 miles away. Northwest Texas Healthcare System is a 495-bed teaching hospital known for its cardiovascular, emergency and childcare departments and is 3 miles north.High winds in the Texas Panhandle
While there is no major flood factor in Olsen, living in Amarillo provides severe weather, such as extreme heat, tornados and high winds. The Texas Panhandle is one of the windiest places in the country because of its location south of the Rocky Mountains.
