Neighbors with Amarillo’s medical industry

When Northwest Texas Hospital, the first public hospital in Amarillo, opened in 1924, it kickstarted a thriving medical industry in the city. A century later, Amarillo’s medical district is still a major employer, and large parks, retail centers and residential neighborhoods have all developed around it. Owners, just south of the medical district, is one of the most accessibly priced neighborhoods close to Amarillo’s hospitals. In addition to established homes, big community gardens and a short trip to Northwest Texas Hospital and Amarillo VA Health Care System, Owners is located along Route 66, giving residents a front-row seat to major community events like the annual Route 66 Festival.

Owners has tight blocks of midcentury bungalows

Owners is a midcentury neighborhood with houses built in the 1950s and 1960s. Common styles are bungalows and ranch homes between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet. Lots are close together, but most properties have enough room for an attached garage, a big front porch and a large backyard. An Owners home typically costs $130,000 to $200,000. Amarillo is prone to high winds year-round, and flooding and tornados can be seasonal concerns for homeowners. However, Owners is not in the city’s floodplains, which reduces potential storm damage.

Research-focused diplomas from Tascosa High

Amarillo Independent School District has well-rated public schools like Avondale Elementary School, which has an A-minus grade on Niche, and B-rated Houston Middle School. Tascosa High School has a B-plus grade, and Niche named it the second-best public high school in Potter County. Tascosa is one of two Amarillo high schools to offer the AP Capstone Diploma program, which lets high schoolers take college-level research courses alongside their regular classes. The Amarillo College West Campus is next to Amarillo VA Health Care System and hosts the college’s health science program at the Allied Health Building.

Shaped by Interstate 40 and Route 66

I-40 forms the bottom part of Owners to the south, and Route 66—known locally as West Amarillo Boulevard—separates the residential neighborhood from the medical district. Both these highways are part of Amarillo City Transit Route 13, which is one of the biggest bus routes in the city. Locals taking the bus or driving themselves will need to travel 6 miles to get to downtown Amarillo and 13 miles to reach Rich Husband Amarillo International Airport.

Botanical gardens and trails at Medical Center Park

Medical Center Park is a mile of green space along Wallace Boulevard that breaks up the medical district’s hospitals and doctors’ offices. The park is most known for the Amarillo Botanical Gardens and has a children’s science museum, fishing lake and splash park. The 9th Street Trails system begins near the north side of Medical Center Park. The system has five miles of updated hiking and mountain trails, and local nonprofit Six Pack Outdoor added an extra trail mile in 2021. “There’s always water running along the creek, and there’s big, beautiful cottonwood trees from one end of the property to the other,” says Chris Podzemny, a director at Six Pack Outdoor and former city of Amarillo employee. “These aren’t exactly beginner trails, but it is a great hike for anyone.”

Locals name My Thai one of Amarillo’s best restaurants

My Thai on Coulter Street has been a community favorite and won a dozen local awards for its Chinese and Thai dishes since it opened in 1986. Best of Amarillo named the café Best Asian Restaurant 8 times and it was an Amarillo Globe Reader Favorite for 5 years. “Amarillo has these places that are all locally, family-owned businesses that have been around for years,” says Melissa Atchley, a lifelong Texan and Associated Broker with Mgroup. “We love to support our local businesses. We have a ton of restaurants, but people will always go and support the small ones.”

The medical center is next to Westgate Mall on I-40, one of the largest shopping centers in the city. It has clothing stores, a movie theater, a trampoline park and grocery stores like Sam’s Club and Target. On the opposite side of Owners, Bell Avenue is where most of the community’s churches are located, including Bell Avenue Church of Christ, St. John Greek Orthodox Church and St. Luke Presbyterian Church.

Festivals and balls at Amarillo Botanical Gardens

Route 66 is one of Amarillo’s biggest claims to fame, and the historic highway is celebrated each summer with the annual Route 66 Festival. Classic car shows, rodeos, live music and a cattle parade all fill the main road for 10 days every June. Amarillo Botanical Gardens also hosts a full calendar of events between March and December, which includes food truck days, jazz performances, a garden festival and a Halloween ball. The garden’s festivities cap off during December with Christmas in the Gardens, when the park is filled with holiday light displays.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
