Amarillo’s first historic district

When real estate developer Dora Oliver-Eakle first arrived in Amarillo in her finest clothes and horse-drawn carriage, she not only turned heads but changed the history of the city for a century to come. The plot of land Oliver-Eakle — also known as “the Duchess” — bought in 1903 is now known as the Plemons Eakle Historic District, named after both Oliver-Eakle and Potter County judge William Buford Plemons. In 1992, Plemons Eakle became the first Amarillo neighborhood to appear on the National Historic Register for its many early 20th-century homes, churches and parks. “I have a heart for the Plemons Eakle neighborhood,” says Andy Justus, a Realtor with Wieck Realty Inc. and news anchor for KAMR Local 4. “It’s so historic, and it has the charm of a brick-lined street with tons of trees and really unique homes with a ton of character and charm.” Plemons Eakle is also next to downtown Amarillo and the loop of Interstates 27 and 40, giving easy access to the cultural center of the city.

Plemons Eakle homes preserved from the 1920s

Plemons Eakle is best known for its signature historic properties built between the 1910s and 1950s. “There’s still many of the original homes there, we’re very proud of that,” says Beth Duke, the executive director of City Center Amarillo and former editor of the Amarillo Globe-News. “Most of those are single-family dwellings, a good mix of bungalows and craftsman.” Ranch homes and Spanish-style properties can also be found along the neighborhood’s brick-lined streets. Single-family homes in Plemons Eakle also neighbor historic mansions-turned-museums, including the Harrington House on Polk Street, the former home of oil magnate Don Harrington. A bungalow or ranch home in Plemons Eakle typically costs between $100,000 to $300,000, while a multi-story home can reach $500,000 to $600,000. While Plemons Eakle is just as prone to high winds, dry heat and seasonal storms as the rest of Amarillo, the neighborhood is outside of the city’s flood zone, which can save homes from being damaged during storms.

Oliver Eakle Park, a gift from the Duchess

History permeates both the neighborhood’s houses and parks. Oliver Eakle Park, between Tyler Street and West 28th Street, is anchored by its signature fountain, donated by “Duchess” Oliver-Eakle. Oliver Eakle Park is a few blocks from Memorial Park on Washington Street, a larger space with basketball courts, tennis courts, a playground and a splash pad. Other neighborhood parks are surrounded by historic landmarks, like Ellwood Park on Jackson Street, which is between three of the neighborhood’s largest churches — St. Mary’s Cathedral on Washington Street, First Presbyterian Church on Harrison Street and First Baptist Church on Tyler Street. Sanborn Park on Taylor Street is across from Polk Street Methodist Church, which appears on the National Historic Register.

Six Car Pub, nominated best restaurant in Amarillo

The neighborhood is a great place to grab Italian food, with Napoli’s on Taylor Street and Valore Italian Restaurant and Grill on Tyler Street both serving traditional pasta, pizza and chicken entrees. Six Car Pub on Polk Street is a favorite gathering spot for brunch, dinner or happy hour. The pub’s craft cocktails, house beer and menu, which includes everything from Korean barbecue to kielbasa pepperoni pizza, earned it a nomination for the Amarillo Globe-News 2024 Best of Amarillo awards.

While most of the stores in the historic district are small boutique shops, it is less than 2 miles from Wolflin Square, a shopping mall off I-40 with chain retail shops, a community theater and grocery stores like Market Street.
