Established community near all the shopping in southwest Amarillo
Surrounded by major thoroughfares on all sides, Puckett West puts homebuyers near southwest Amarillo’s retail corridor and next to the city’s medical facilities. While Westgate Mall calls the community home, numerous other retail options are along South Soncy Street and Coulter Avenue. Primarily developed in the 1970s, the neighborhood is in the A-minus-rated school district and within 3 miles of the city’s largest park. “It is one of the few neighborhoods in Amarillo that doesn’t have a community park or school,” says Landon Moreland, the broker-owner with Moreland Real Estate Group, who has sold properties in Puckett West. “But it's not necessarily a bad thing. You don’t have to deal with the added traffic of the park or school traffic during the week. There is plenty of shopping with the mall right there, and you’re right next to the medical district.”
Brick ranch homes from the 1970s
Puckett West's wide neighborhood streets are a little less traveled than the retail corridor that surrounds them and are lined with sidewalks shaded by a scattering of trees. “Most of the homes in the subdivision were built in the 1970s, and it was a really popular area when it was built,” says Hugh Bonifield, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker First Equity who has sold homes in the area. “It is affordable, and many families look in Puckett West.” Brick ranch homes that range from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet dot compact front yards and offer fenced-in backyards. Most homes sell between $250,000 and $375,000, and the market moves faster than the national average, with listings averaging 21 days, compared to the national average of 44 days.

The windiest region in the county
Chicago calls itself the Windy City, but in reality, that motto should be applied to Amarillo. Ranked annually as the country's windiest city, Amarillo's average wind gusts top out at about 13 MPH. The Texas Panhandle experiences all types of weather, from extreme heat to below-freezing temperatures to severe weather, including thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Closer to the mall, there is an increased risk of flooding, but the FFederal Emergency Management Agency encourages all Texas homeowners to purchase flood insurance due to the state’s history.
