North Amarillo neighborhood with a strong community feel
Passersby know when they are driving past River Road East on U.S. Route 87 when they pass what is known locally as the Dumas Dinosaur. While this roadside attraction dinosaur statue provides an interesting landmark, it doesn’t tell the area's story. River Road East is an established community about 5 miles north of Downtown Amarillo and offers a more tranquil environment with all of the city’s amenities nearby. The neighborhood has started to see a resurgence with a new residential development at the south end and an already established community that dates back to the 1950s. “We are about as close to Mayberry as you can find,” says Christie Harrison, a lifelong Amarillo resident and Realtor with Fathom Realty. “People take care of each other out here. If someone is in need, people rally around them. It has been a great place to raise my family and truly is somewhere you can call home.”

Midcentury ranch-style houses amongst a new development
Ranch-style houses with hipped roofs and bungalows built in the 1950s through 1970s comprise the neighborhood’s original home inventory. Properties adorn rectangular lots with modest front yards, fenced-in backyards and an attached garage. Over the last few years, the opportunity to purchase new construction Craftsman builds. The newer homes are spaced a little tighter together but still feature a modest front yard, fenced-in backyards and an attached two-car garage. Older homes can sell between $215,000 and $250,000, while new constructions start around $270,000 and rise to a little more than $300,000. “Overall, homes in Amarillo are affordable compared to other places in Texas,” Harrison says. “The market is moving slower than the last few years, and I feel like I am seeing more price drops than ever.”
Amarillo Texas was founded in the late 19th century and grew as a center for cattle shipping.

Both schools score a B on Niche. Students move on to River Road Middle School, which gets a B-plus, and River Road High School scores a B-minus. Various recreation options at Thompson Memorial Park
Willow Vista Park is a tree-lined park with a paved walking trail that navigates around the perimeter. The park has a playground and a hard-surfaced basketball court for pickup games. There is ample open space for a picnic or a game of fetch with dogs. Thompson Memorial Park, the city’s largest, is less than 3 miles south. Parkgoers can take advantage of walking trails that offer views of the manufactured lake at the park's center, a recently renovated community pool, and a disc golf course. The site is home to the Amarillo Zoo and a privately run Wonderland Amusement Park, which offers at least 30 attractions. Golfers can take on one of the two 18-hole courses at the Ross Rogers Golf Course, operated by the city and neighbors Thompson Memorial Park.

Thirty locally owned restaurants about 5 miles south
Closer to home, residents can run quick errands at the Dollar General on River Road or head 2 miles south to the United Supermarkets. There are a handful of nearby restaurants like Wesley’s Bean Pot and Barbeque in the Fair Lane Shopping Center or the Burger Barn, which is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Downtown Amarillo has 30 locally owned restaurants and favorites include Crush Wine Bar and Six Car Pub and Brewery, which both have live music throughout the week. “I don’t think people realize how many restaurants Amarillo has per capita,” Harrison says. “The food is delicious too. Mexican, sushi, anything you can think of, we have it all.”

Plenty of entertainment options in Downtown Amarillo
Being one of the largest cities in this part of the country, Amarillo has plenty of its own entertainment. The city has a symphony orchestra and ballet company that performs at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. City Center Amarillo is a nonprofit that is a significant player in downtown's revitalization. The group hosts numerous events, including High Noon on the Square, a free summer concert series on the Potter County Courthouse lawn, and the Electric Light Parade each holiday season. “I’m just so proud of my city,” says Beth Duke, the executive director of City Center Amarillo and lifelong resident. “We are one of the only cities our size in the country to have our own local symphony, opera and ballet company.”

Prime location in north Amarillo
Amarillo is a car-dependent city, and residents benefit from two thoroughfares to the west and the south. U.S. Route 87 runs to the west and is how commuters can get more than 5 miles south to downtown. Texas State Loop 335 runs to the south and encircles the city. Known as the Loop, it’s how residents get the 12 miles east to the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport or the 11 miles west to Northwest Texas Healthcare System, a nearly 500-bed teaching hospital. Church is a big way of life in Amarillo, according to Duke, and there are numerous nearby options across most denominations. Trinity Fellowship Church on Willow Creek and Pavillard Baptist Church are in the neighborhood.

Increased risks for floods and fires in River Road East
River Road East is at a higher risk for several natural disasters. The eastern portion of the neighborhood along East Amarillo Creek is at an increased risk of flooding. FEMA encourages all Texas homeowners to purchase flood insurance, while some federal lenders will require it because of its increased risk. The city is at an increased risk for wildfires because the lower humidity dries plants out, making them accelerants. The city can also have extreme heat, freezing temperatures, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
