East Amarillo community north of Interstate 40
Driving on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, passers by may take a second glance when they go by spray-painted Volkswagen Beetles halfway buried in the ground. A nod to Cadillac Ranch, farther west on Historic Route 66, Slug Bug Ranch is the unofficial neighborhood sign of Sunrise. The east Amarillo community is best known for this roadside attraction and the accompanying Starlight Ranch Event Center. It also offers two elementary schools and community parks conveniently located north of I-40. “Sunrise has affordable homes and has a lot of rental properties,” says William Wheeler, a Realtor with Fathom Realty, who has been selling the Amarillo market for six years. “Its location right off the interstate means it has easy access to shopping and its close to downtown.”

Wide neighborhood streets are lined with ranch-style houses and bungalows built between the 1940s and 1970s. It also has a few duplexes along Dunaway Street. Homes rest on compact lots highlighted by scattered trees across the community. Addresses feature fenced-in backyards and have driveways, while some homes include an attached garage. Based on size and condition, prices range from $65,000 for a house in need of repair to just under $220,000. The market moves slightly slower than the national average, with a listing average of 46 days compared to the national average of 42 days.

Two elementary schools in Sunrise
Sunrise is part of the Amarillo Independent School District (AISD), which gets an A-minus on Niche and serves 30,000 students. A District of Innovation, the AISD has more say over its curriculum and some of the same flexibility afforded to charter schools. Students west of Trigg Street attend Humphrey’s Highland Elementary School, while those to the east attend Sunrise Elementary. The elementary schools earn a B and B-plus, respectively, from Niche. Both schools advance to Bowie Sixth Grade Campus, which gets a C-plus, and is for sixth grade only, Bowie Middle School and Caprock High School. The middle and high schools earn a B, while Caprock High offers multiple foreign language courses, including American Sign Language.

Recreation soccer games at Benton Park
Adjacent to Sunrise Elementary, Sunrise School Park provides ample open space for pickup soccer matches or picnics and is encircled by a paved walking trail. Benton Park on South Vernon Street is another recreation option. The space has one of the city’s 13 splash pads, open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The park is also visited for its soccer fields, which are used for recreational league games. “We maintain 65 public parks throughout the city, including some of the school parks,” says Becki Dryer, assistant director of Amarillo Parks and Recreation. “We care a lot about our community and keeping our parks looking good for our residents who rely on them.

Grocery shopping at Amigos
A quick 2-mile drive down South Grand Street will lead locals to a grocery store and a few big-box retailers. Part of the Texas-headquartered United Family, Amigos United is a stop for groceries and shares a shopping center with Ross. The corridor is also home to a Walmart Supercenter. Residents have their choice of many local Mexican restaurants in Sunrise, including Tortilleria Lupita on Southeast 10th Avenue. Concerts at the Starlight Ranch Event Center
While the Big Texan Restaurant is known for its 72-ounce steak, it also has event spaces and attractions scattered in Sunrise. Paying tribute to Cadillac Ranch, a bit farther west, the Slug Bug Ranch is the same idea, but instead of Cadillacs, its Volkswagen Beetles. The roadside attraction features cars dug halfway into the ground, and visitors can spray paint them to commemorate their visit. It's right in front of The Starlight Ranch Event Center, one of the top concert venues in Amarillo. The event center has unique accommodations, including Airstream Campers or cabins. “It’s one of the coolest places in the city and highlights of the area,” Wheeler says. The Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is held at the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition & Tri-State Fair & Rodeo, less than 2 miles away each September. The fairgrounds host numerous events throughout the year, with the fair and the Route 66 Festival being the largest.

Interstate 40 runs south of Sunrise
While I-40 runs directly south, residents can get around the city without hopping on the major interstate. Southeast Third Avenue is the quickest route to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, while Southeast 10th Avenue takes commuters 4 miles west into downtown.
