East Amarillo community north of Interstate 40

Driving on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, passers by may take a second glance when they go by spray-painted Volkswagen Beetles halfway buried in the ground. A nod to Cadillac Ranch, farther west on Historic Route 66, Slug Bug Ranch is the unofficial neighborhood sign of Sunrise. The east Amarillo community is best known for this roadside attraction and the accompanying Starlight Ranch Event Center. It also offers two elementary schools and community parks conveniently located north of I-40. “Sunrise has affordable homes and has a lot of rental properties,” says William Wheeler, a Realtor with Fathom Realty, who has been selling the Amarillo market for six years. “Its location right off the interstate means it has easy access to shopping and its close to downtown.”

Ranch-style and bungalow homes on compact lots

Wide neighborhood streets are lined with ranch-style houses and bungalows built between the 1940s and 1970s. It also has a few duplexes along Dunaway Street. Homes rest on compact lots highlighted by scattered trees across the community. Addresses feature fenced-in backyards and have driveways, while some homes include an attached garage. Based on size and condition, prices range from $65,000 for a house in need of repair to just under $220,000. The market moves slightly slower than the national average, with a listing average of 46 days compared to the national average of 42 days.

Two elementary schools in Sunrise

Sunrise is part of the Amarillo Independent School District (AISD), which gets an A-minus on Niche and serves 30,000 students. A District of Innovation, the AISD has more say over its curriculum and some of the same flexibility afforded to charter schools. Students west of Trigg Street attend Humphrey’s Highland Elementary School, while those to the east attend Sunrise Elementary. The elementary schools earn a B and B-plus, respectively, from Niche. Both schools advance to Bowie Sixth Grade Campus, which gets a C-plus, and is for sixth grade only, Bowie Middle School and Caprock High School. The middle and high schools earn a B, while Caprock High offers multiple foreign language courses, including American Sign Language.

Concerts at the Starlight Ranch Event Center

While the Big Texan Restaurant is known for its 72-ounce steak, it also has event spaces and attractions scattered in Sunrise. Paying tribute to Cadillac Ranch, a bit farther west, the Slug Bug Ranch is the same idea, but instead of Cadillacs, its Volkswagen Beetles. The roadside attraction features cars dug halfway into the ground, and visitors can spray paint them to commemorate their visit. It's right in front of The Starlight Ranch Event Center, one of the top concert venues in Amarillo. The event center has unique accommodations, including Airstream Campers or cabins. “It’s one of the coolest places in the city and highlights of the area,” Wheeler says. The Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is held at the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition & Tri-State Fair & Rodeo, less than 2 miles away each September. The fairgrounds host numerous events throughout the year, with the fair and the Route 66 Festival being the largest.
