Northwest Amarillo community developed within the last decade
While there are no grape-bearing vines on a countryside, the Vineyards-Hastings community is still growing. It's located about 5 miles northwest of the city center has sprung up from just raw land within the last decade. “Vineyards-Hastings is a really cool area, and it’s gone from vacant fields to a full-scale developed community in the last seven to eight years,” says Taylor Mangiameli, a Realtor with Wellborn Real Estate, who was born and raised in the city. “They have like 10 to 15 different plans you can choose from to build your home.” The community’s location means residents will have to drive a bit farther to get to amenities, but it feeds into the newest elementary and middle school in the Amarillo Independent School District.

Addresses also have covered entrances, a driveway and a garage. “It’s little oasis,” Mangiameli says. “The houses are cool and not your typical cookie-cutter homes. There is no HOA. Just a couple of builders have developed the area.” Prices range from $240,000 to around $365,000 based on property size. Attending the newest two schools in the AISD
Vineyards-Hasting is part of the A-minus-rated Amarillo Independent School District (AISD), which teaches around 30,000 kids annually. A Texas District of Innovation, the AISD has more say over its curriculum and some of the same flexibilities awarded to charter schools. Students can attend Woodlands Elementary School and De Zavala Middle School, the district’s two newest schools. Both get an A grade from Niche. They may advance to Tascosa High School, which gets a B-plus and offers a standard and an AP Capstone diploma. According to April Brownlee, who works for the AISD Communications Department, all AISD high school students may choose to spend a portion of their school day at AmTech Career Academy. The career academy offers nine different schools, including animal science and transportation.

United Supermarket locations for groceries
Located in the northern part of the city, residents will have to drive a few miles to get to shopping and dining. The United Supermarket on River Road is only about 2 miles away and is the closest option. However, the United Supermarket on West Amarillo Boulevard is closer to big-box stores like Walmart, Tractor Supply and Lowe’s and is only 5 miles away. “It’s not in the most central area of town,” Mangiameli says. “You will have to drive to anything you want to do.” The story is the same for a night out or to eat. Some locally-owned restaurants like David’s Mexican are nearby on Easting Hastings Avenue. Downtown Amarillo is only 5 miles south and has more than 30 local spots, including a bunch on Polk Street. Some favorites include Toscana Italian Steakhouse, which has a speakeasy-themed bar and is in the historic Barfield building, and Crush Wine Bar, offering live music on select nights.
