The hardest part about living in Walnut Hills is finding the way home. The only way in and out is a road that peeps out of a tunnel with railroad tracks above it along Hester Road. The small community is adjacent to the Tascosa Golf Club, and being hard to find gives it a rare sense of exclusivity and privacy. Located in northwest Amarillo, Walnut Hills is a short drive to downtown and big-box stores, and it is zoned for the highly rated Amarillo Independent School District. “It’s a really neat neighborhood because it’s hidden in plain sight,” says Jinger White, a Realtor with ERA Courtyard Real Estate who’s been selling Amarillo real estate for about 20 years. “This area of Amarillo is growing, and they’re starting to open more space out in Walnut Hills.”

Rarely available ranch-style homes
Finding Walnut Hills itself may be easier than purchasing a home in this hidden neighborhood because of the sheer lack of inventory. Potential homebuyers can find ranch-style houses, and Craftsman builds. More recently, homes have been torn down and custom-built with touches of Spanish architecture. Properties are on respectable lots hidden by trees and a little more space in the backyards than other Amarillo city neighborhoods. Prices range between $275,000 and $400,000. Custom-built properties can cost $900,000 to a little over $1 million. “A lot of the market will depend on price point,” White says. “Overall, the market is stable but has been on the slower side.” Walnut Hills has a 2 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the national average of 4.
