Southwest Amarillo neighborhood in the heart of the city’s growth
Westover is a southwest Amarillo neighborhood sandwiched between the main thoroughfares Coulter and Bell streets. The community was developed between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. It’s part of the A-rated Canyon Independent School District, and its location is at the heart of most of the city’s growth. “It’s very easily accessible to wherever in the city,” says Debbie Duncan, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker First Equity, who’s sold homes in the area. “It’s just north of The Loop so that residents can get to the eastern part of town for work or to go to the airport quickly.”
Craftsman builds on modest lots in Westover
With only a few entrance and exit points, Westover’s wide neighborhood streets are less traveled and loop into numerous cul-de-sacs. Craftsman homes have varying facades, resting on modest, well-kept front yards accented by trees. Most addresses have fenced-in backyards and garages in the back. Prices range from $240,000 to $415,000, and listings only average 23 days on the market, which is faster than the national average. “The houses here are newer and larger,” Duncan says. “Homes are close to the districted schools, and it's just in a good location.” Westover's 3 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score is lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.
Traditional homes feature classic gabled roofs and shutters.
Ranch-style houses offer open layouts and large lots.

Arden Road School Park is behind the elementary school and provides ample green space encircled by a paved walking trail underneath the shade of trees. The green space also has a playground, picnic areas and hard-surfaced basketball courts for pick-up games. Less than 5 miles away is John Stiff Memorial Park, one of the city’s regional parks. Spanning 355 acres, it's loaded with two playgrounds, a community pool and walking trails surrounding McDonald Lake, where anglers cast a line. More features here include a skate park and the Amarillo National Tennis Center, which has rentable court space. “John Stiff Park is one of our busiest parks throughout the year, says Becki Dryer, the assistant director for Amarillo Parks and Recreation. “Parks are important on so many levels, and people use our park for various reasons. We love seeing our community take advantage of our spaces.” About 2 miles south, Preston West Golf Course is an 18-hole public track that offers practice facilities and Bar 3 for post-round celebrations.

Coulter Street South is a gateway to the city
Coulter Street South is the neighborhood’s western border, giving residents access to national brand stores and fast-food restaurants. The roadway is the quickest route to Northwest Texas Medical Center, a 500-bed teaching hospital, 6 miles north. Interstate 27 to the east leads the 9 miles downtown, where the interstate connects with I-40. That route is how commuters can get 16 miles to the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Just south is the Texas State Loop 335, known locally as The Loop, an alternative highway that encircles the city.
Amarillo is the real windy city
While Chicago may be known as the Windy City, Amarillo actually ranks as one of the windiest places in the country annually. Due to consistent low pressure and vast open space, wind gusts average over 13 mph. The city experiences all four seasons, with days reaching over 100 in the summer and below freezing in the winter. While Westover is not at an increased risk, Amarillo is susceptible to tornadoes, flooding and wildfires.
