Whether you're looking for a vacation home or you want to live a year-round resort lifestyle, Alyeska has something for you. This lively neighborhood is located in the larger Girdwood community, about 40 miles south of Downtown Anchorage. Snowsports are the big draw, with the towering Mt. Alyeska offering over 1,600 acres of skiable terrain, but outdoor activities are available in all four seasons. The small mountain community keeps the essentials close by, with a grocery store, a few small shops and popular restaurants. Year-round adventure on the mountain

Alyeska Resort is the state's largest ski area, with seven lifts and 76 named trails. The mountain gets buried in over 600 inches of snow each winter, making it a playground for skiers and snowboarders. Ski season usually runs from Thanksgiving through April, and there’s even a 3-mile cross-country loop at the base of the mountain if you’d rather glide than fly downhill. When the snow melts, other sports take the stage. You can take a lift up the mountain and bike down, crossing a variety of terrain along the way. Hikes in the area range from easy treks like Virgin Creek Falls to difficult trails like the North Face, which gains over 2,000 feet of elevation in just over 2 miles. More adventurous hikers can head to the Crow Pass Trailhead, which offers a 21-mile trip through the Chugach Mountains. The neighborhood also has a small park on Egloff Drive with a playground, skate park and tennis courts.

How much to pay for a mountain cabin in Alyeska

Most homes here are cozy log cabins or Craftsman-style houses hidden away among tall pine trees. Gravel roads and mountain views give the whole area a relaxed, natural feeling. A couple thousand people live here year-round, but there are also a lot of short-term rentals and second homes. Properties close to the resort are highly sought after. "The closer to the mountain you are, the better. Ski in, ski out is a term we like to use a lot," says Paige Gibson, a Realtor at Herrington and Company, LLC with a decade of experience. "If you're close enough to the mountain, you can jump off and ski right to your condo or your home." Houses typically cost between the mid-$600,000s and just over $1.2 million.

Annual events bring neighbors and tourists together

The Alyeska Resort keeps life exciting with a full calendar. One of the biggest events of the year is Spring Carnival in April, which includes the Slush Cup ski event. "It's where people dress in crazy costumes and try to hit a jump and fly over a manmade pond in freezing cold temperatures," Gibson says. "It's a big party festival." The resort's Blueberry Festival also brings in a lot of visitors for pie-eating contests, arts and crafts booths and berry picking.

Winter safety in rural Anchorage

The Alaska Department of Transportation handles winter maintenance on most of the main roads in the area, including Seward Highway. The highway is a Priority Level 1 route, meaning it takes up to 12 hours to be cleared after a storm. Other roads here can take between 18 and 30 hours. Wildlife safety is also important in a rural neighborhood like Alyeska, where sightings are common. Some things you can do to stay safe include keeping trash and food inside, using a bear-proof trash can and never feeding wildlife.
