Residents of Northeast Anchorage have easy access to all of their shopping and dining needs. The community is centered around a Walmart Supercenter and Fred Meyer at the intersection of DeBarr Road and Muldoon Road, where locals can pick up groceries and other household items. Just north of Glenn Highway is Tikahtnu Commons, an outdoor shopping center with stores like Target, Burlington, Lowe's and Costco. Residents can catch hit movies at Regal Tikahtnu or dine at popular chain restaurants like Texas Roadhouse and Olive Garden. For one of the most popular restaurants in town, residents can hop on Glenn Highway for a quick 5-mile drive to Lucky Wishbone. "Not only is the chicken really nicely fried, but they have homemade strawberry milkshakes. Maybe not everyone is a strawberry shake person, but OMG. You get real pieces of strawberry in there," Tolbert says. For other downtown options—like Glacier Brewhouse, 49th State Brewing and Simon & Seafort’s Saloon & Grill—residents can make the quick 5-mile drive along Glenn Highway.Established homes at the foot of the mountains
Buyers can find various housing styles in Northeast Anchorage, but midcentury ranch-style homes are among the most common. "There are older, quaint homes in there. They've got a lot of homes that were built in the 1950s and 1960s," Tolbert says. The area has a suburban feel, but some homes are situated on larger lots that offer more privacy and room for activities. In the neighborhood's more secluded and forested parts, buyers can find A-frame log cabins surrounded by mature pines. Many homes in the neighborhood offer a glimpse of the towering Chugach Mountains to the east. Buyers can find three-bedroom homes for $350,000 to $500,000. Several city parks offer plenty of room for outdoor recreation in Northeast Anchorage. Residents can visit Cheney Lake for fishing and kayaking in the summer or ice skating in the winter. Nunaka Valley Park is a popular destination for sports, with several softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a volleyball court. Just east of the neighborhood, residents can visit Russian Jack Springs Park to stroll along the forested trails or tee off on the nine-hole, par-31 golf course.College and career prep at local schools
Students in Northeast Anchorage might attend Chester Valley Elementary School, Nicholas J. Begich Middle School and Bartlett High School. The elementary and middle schools each receive C-plus ratings from Niche, while the high school is rated a B-plus. The high school serves approximately 1,400 students and has a comprehensive curriculum that includes several AP courses, a medical academy and the option to attend King Tech High School for half-day vocational training. Students can also participate in extracurricular activities like the Army JROTC program or cross-country skiing.Celebrating Alaskan culture
Northeast Anchorage residents can learn about Alaskan culture at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, conveniently located in the neighborhood's northeast corner. This center celebrates and promotes Alaska Native traditions and culture. Visitors can browse permanent exhibits in the museum, view movies about native cultures, and visit life-size village sites situated around Lake Tiulana. While this museum is within the neighborhood, other popular cultural sites are just minutes away on Glenn Highway, including the Alaska Center for Performing Arts and the Anchorage Museum.Ease of access to all of Anchorage
Multiple transportation options around Northeast Anchorage make it easy for residents to get around the city. Several bus routes serve the neighborhood, including the Northern Lights, DeBarr and Tudor routes, which can take residents downtown. Glenn Highway is the main route people use to get downtown, a 5.7-mile drive that takes around 10 minutes without traffic. Residents are also about 5 miles from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson along Glenn Highway. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is about 9 miles southwest of the neighborhood along DeBarr Road and Walter J. Hickel Parkway.
