Popular outdoor activities in Rabbit Creek
Exploring the mountains is a favorite pastime for Rabbit Creek residents. “There’s great access to trails. We’re bordered on one side by Chugach State Park, which is the largest state park in the United States, with multiple access points in the neighborhood,” says Tim Alderson, the chair of the Rabbit Creek Community Council. The Rabbit Creek Trail is one of the most popular, offering a 4.4-mile trek to a scenic lake. There’s also a nearby trail that leads to Flattop Mountain, the most-hiked peak in Alaska. This hike is known for its rock scrambling and the abundance of blueberries in the fall. The boardwalk at Potter Marsh is a great spot to see wildlife, including eagles, salmon and moose. Alderson says the marsh freezes over in the winter, making it a popular spot for ice skating. For a more traditional park setting, head to Roy E. Storck Homestead Park, which has a playground, baseball field and picnic shelter

When to expect snowplowing in Rabbit Creek
With the rural setting, winter road maintenance is a top concern in Rabbit Creek. “A lot of times, people who live back in there have to use four-wheel drive with chains,” says Paul Lambert, a Realtor at Herrington and Company LLC with 25 years of experience. “It can be challenging in the winter.” Main roads in the area are maintained by the state, but others are part of Limited Road Service Areas, which are groups made up of elected boards that contract plows for winter maintenance. Alderson recommends looking up which LRSA you would be buying a home in and familiarizing yourself with how they operate. He estimates that most parts of the community are plowed within 24 hours of a snowstorm.
Staying bear aware in rural Anchorage
Wildlife safety is important in a neighborhood as close to nature as Rabbit Creek. “I’ve seen black bears right in people’s driveways, so yeah, you probably want to have a bear-proof trash can and things like that,” Lambert says. Some common tips include:
Storing trash inside your home until the morning of pickup
Keeping pet food indoors and being mindful of bird seed if you have a feeder
