A mix of convenience and recreation near downtown Anchorage
Tucked behind a popular recreational greenbelt, residents of Rogers Park enjoy a quiet, community-oriented vibe just minutes from downtown Anchorage. “It’s a centrally located neighborhood, and every street has sidewalks and alleys. It’s a walking neighborhood with a real sense of community. There’s lots of people walking their dogs and their kids,” says Gary Cox, known as the Alaska Real Estate King, with Real Estate Brokers of Alaska. “It’s right in the heart of town, like 10 minutes from everything.” Natural beauty abounds in this residential area, with mature trees lining the streets and nearby parks offering plenty of excitement for residents who want to experience a bit of the wilderness without leaving the confines of the city. But when it’s time for a trip to the grocery store or a night out for dinner, shopping and dining are just a short drive away.

Midcentury homes in midtown Anchorage
Homebuyers can find traditional midcentury homes throughout the neighborhood, including a mix of one-story and split-level ranch-style houses. Most homes here have either vinyl or clapboard siding and come in various colors that match the neighborhood’s natural beauty, including shades of blue, green and brown. Most houses have built-in garages for added security, and some have rear-entry garages accessible from alleys behind the house. Homes in Rogers Park are somewhat close together, but the mature evergreens that line the streets add a sense of privacy and serenity to each property. Many houses in the neighborhood have been remodeled, which is a significant factor in the price of the homes. “A 1960 home that hasn’t been updated with a basement and detached garage would be very common. Or an updated home where they’ve done a total remodel,” Cox says. “So you’re talking a $350,000 house that needs renovating or a fully renovated $750,00 house.”

Anchorage is a great place to live. People are generally friendly and the population isn't too high. It is in close proximity to the mountains and ocean, giving everyone the opportunity to get outside year round. In the winter, however, the sun barely rises most days, creating terrible mood troubles with maybe members of the community. The community is very involved in the arts and performance.

This may be affected because I am a woman, but there is no direct ranking toward what I feel. I feel really safe, most of the time, I know that police are there if I need them, and I know what to do if I am in an emergency. There is only one downside to having a lot of space, and that you need a lot more police than you would in other places. Our biggest crime is rape, so I do not go out at night on the coastal trail, and if I am going camping or hiking I go with someone else. It is safe if you are safe, sometimes the police are three hours away so the biggest safety concern is finding ways to keep yourself safe from things such as rape. Be safe.
