Family-friendly living south of the M-14
The neighborhoods surrounding Garden Homes Park are adjacent to Wines Elementary and Forsythe High, which gives the area a family-friendly atmosphere. "It's a very family-oriented location, and the price is a bit more reasonable than some of the other neighborhoods that surround schools," says Pat Daum, a Realtor with Daum Group under Keller Williams Realty. Homes here also enjoy easy access to natural parks and the nearby M-14 freeway, but proximity to the major road does bring noise to the otherwise quiet area.
Walkable elementary and middle school
Students in Garden Homes are zoned to start at Wines Elementary School, which gets an A-plus rating from the website Niche. The school sits next to A-rated Forsythe Middle School, so both schools are walkable from nearby homes. The two schools share a wide-open campus with outdoor sports fields. Older kids take the bus across the highway to Skyline High School, rated A-plus. The high school is known for its magnet programs, which encourage advanced learning in biomedical science, engineering, communications and business.
The Wines Elementary School is known for having small class sizes and high test scores.
Forsythe Middle School helps connect peers for an easy transition to high school.

Midcentury homes at affordable prices
Most properties in the Garden Homes area are low-slung ranchers and compact Cape Cods. Most date back to the mid-1900s, and the recency of renovations affects price point. In general, smaller homes with around 1,000 square feet start at $350,000, and those with around 2,000 square feet get up to $600,000. With an average price of $450,000, the neighborhoods are one of the more affordable spots in Ann Arbor. Properties around Garden Home Park enjoy a wide-open green space right in their backyard, but most homes also have comfortable yards, usually just under a quarter-acre.

Local green spaces and sprawling nature areas
The Garden Homes Park checks all the boxes for a neighborhood gathering space, from a welcoming playground to ample walking pathways crisscrossing the shaded green space. It's a popular area for playdates and dog walks, with paths that connect right out onto residential streets. For more outdoor fun, one of the biggest draws to the northwest side of Ann Arbor is the access to the Huron River and surrounding nature areas. Bird Hills Nature Area is a popular hiking and birding spot, and Bandemer Nature Area is known for its riverside picnic areas.
Pathways leading to Garden Homes park run between houses, connecting many homes to the park.

Freeway access and road noise
The neighborhood has direct access to the Route 14 freeway, but the entrance is a two-way entrance/exit ramp with roundabouts, which can be confusing initially. But easy access to the highway means quick trips out east or west. However, the noise from the road infiltrates a lot of the neighborhood; notably, the Wines Elementary playground sits directly adjacent to the main road. "There is some road noise, especially close to the freeway," Daum says. "It's not a huge deal for many of the homes, but it's something to be aware of."
Shopping options down Maple Road
Maple Road offers direct access to grocery options like Aldi and Kroger, as well as the locally sourced Plum Market. Next to the grocery stores, locals enjoy the old-school atmosphere at Knight's Steakhouse and upscale American fare at Zingerman's Roadhouse. Closer to home, Juicy Kitchen is just a walk away, known for its vegan options. And downtown is about 2 miles away along Miller Avenue, offering a variety of restaurants and the activity surrounding the University of Michigan. Convenient bus lines run along both Maple and Miller.
Residents of Garden Homes can stop by Aldi for all of their grocery needs.
