Family-friendly suburb in western Ann Arbor
The neighborhood of Liberty Glen really has three separate communities — Liberty Glen, Liberty Oaks Condominiums and Liberty Pointe Condominiums. Despite the whoosh of Interstate traffic along the western edge of the neighborhood, all three of these West Side communities have a family-friendly atmosphere due to the adjacent Lakewood Elementary School and enjoy downtown Ann Arbor being just 3 miles away. And locals here don't always need to head into the city, as large shopping centers, outdoor parks and an athletic facility are all less than a mile away.

Community around an "A" rated elementary school
All the residential streets are lined with sidewalks, making it possible for younger kids to walk safely to the nearby Lakewood Elementary School. Like most Ann Arbor elementary schools, Lakewood gets an A from Niche. And with an 11-1 student-teacher ratio, the school has a close-knit community. Helen Tyler, a resident of Liberty Glen and member of the Parent Teacher Organization at Lakewood, says one of her favorite parts of the neighborhood is being able to walk her kids to school. "As we walk to school, we pick up kids on the way," Tyler says. "I call it the walking school bus." According to Tyler, the neighborhood has seen an increase in families moving in recent years, and often, neighborhood kids end up in class together. And the classes are small for the district, with an average student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. As they get older, children are zoned for the A-rated Forsythe Middle and then A-plus-rated Skyline High.

Athletic Club and outdoor spaces
For some residents, one of the biggest draws of the neighborhood is the Liberty Athletic Club, which sits directly across Liberty Road. For a monthly fee, members get access to indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, including two pools, tennis courts and pickleball courts. "The proximity to the Liberty Athletic Club is major," Tyler says. "It feels like a neighborhood clubhouse — when I walk over there, I run into all of my neighbors." The Club also offers childcare options and sports classes, another benefit in a neighborhood with so many kids. All homes are also less than a 1/2 mile from Burr Oak Park, which has a small playground, walking path and shaded green space. And for those who like to hike, the neighborhood is connected to the trails that crisscross through the Dolph Nature Area and around the two small lakes.

Walk to shopping centers and a local library
The neighborhood is less than a mile from some of Ann Arbor's most prominent shopping centers: Westgate and Maple. The shopping corridor is close enough that it's a walkable trip for some. "It's not always the prettiest walk since you go over the highway," Tyler laughs. "But most of it is nice, and I love being able to walk to get groceries or visit the local library." Grocery options include Arbor Farms Market and Kroger, and next door, the Westgate Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library has an interior café. Nearby restaurants include Chela's, which is known for its tacos, and Zingerman's Roadhouse, a classic for a night out. A bit closer to home, locals enjoy coffee at the family-owned 19 Drips Coffee & Tea.

Suburban homes in Liberty Glen
Liberty Glen offers a traditional suburban feel with sidewalk-lined streets, wide green yards and cul-de-sacs where kids can play after school. 1980s properties with Colonial and Tudor-influenced designs usually have around a 1/4 acre and back into groves of mature trees. For prices, low-slung ranch homes start at $475,000, and larger 4-bedroom homes get up to $600,000. The cost per square foot here is much lower than in communities closer to the city's center. Liberty Glen does have an HOA with fees of around $45 per year, but it is optional. "The HOA helps maintain Burr Oak Park, and we plan a few events," says Tyler, who is a member herself. "The biggest event is Atterberry Jam, where we bring lawn chairs and a food truck out on Atterberry Court, and neighbors get together and perform."

Interstate access brings road noise
The neighborhood has quick access to Interstate 94, a prominent highway leading towards Ypsilanti, the Wayne County Airport and Detroit. That proximity brings some road noise to the area, especially for the Liberty Pointe community, but there is a buffer of trees. Liberty Drive also connects 3 miles right into the lively heart of Ann Arbor, and a bus line runs along it, offering a 15-minute ride to downtown. And even with traffic, it's rarely more than a 20-minute drive. For longer trips, the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is 30 miles east, past Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.
A walkable bridge carries residents across I-94.
Rows of uniform condos also welcome homeowners in Liberty Glen.
