A trendy option south of Burns Park
South Packard, often referred to as “SoPac,” sits just south of the Burns Park area. It's more affordable than its popular neighbor, with a young and trendy feel. "A lot of first-time buyers live in the neighborhood, as they are smaller homes," says Veronica Long, a local Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. But size isn’t an indicator of spirit. This lively neighborhood was able to take what used to be an industrial area along Packard and transform it into a stretch of local bars, restaurants and small businesses. “The residents are really proud of their walkable and quirky neighborhood," Long adds.

What’s along Packard Street
One of the biggest draws to the neighborhood is a solid selection of local businesses clustered around Packard Street. Brittany Patton, who grew up in the area and still works nearby at the Ann Arbor Senior Center, says: "I remember I would always stop by Dairy Queen on the way home from school, and my parents still go to Fraser's all the time to meet friends for a game of cards.” Newer additions include YORK, a coffee shop, restaurant and locally sourced deli, known for its sandwiches and the best wine selection in the city. YORK also brings in a rotating selection of food trucks, and the Asian-fusion barbecue at Ricewood was so wildly popular that it now has a permanent spot. Oz's Music has won awards for being Ann Arbor’s best music store, and many residents wouldn't dream of taking their car anywhere besides Packard Auto Repair. "People love to support the local businesses — they are really part of the community," Patton attests.

Staying busy in and around SoPac
It may not have the fame of Kerrytown or other Ann Arbor giants, but SoPac has plenty to offer to stay busy. YORK hosts live music events, plant swaps and single-mingle nights. Oz's Music offers individual lessons or summer camp programs, and Fraser's has weekly trivia nights and gets packed on U of M game days. And for families with young kids, Granger Avenue is "the" go-to spot on Halloween, known city-wide for its elaborate decorations and generous king-size offerings.

Homes in the SoPac neighborhood include welcoming bungalows and classic brick-walled ranch-style houses, with some charming Cape Cods and spacious colonial-style homes. Prices vary from $400,000 for two-bedroom homes to around $900,000 for a renovated four-bedroom home with a spacious yard. There are also a few condos priced from $150,000 to $450,000. Streets are usually lined by sidewalks and mature trees, with a more meandering feel than the gridded living closer to the city.
Wide sidewalks and ample front lawns make South Park a great neighborhood for a walk.

Walk to Trader Joe's, bike to downtown
Groceries are made easy with a nearby Trader Joe’s at the neighborhood's corner. For city life, South Packard residents can reach downtown and the University of Michigan, 2 miles away, via Packard Street. "It's possible to walk to downtown, and it's on a good bus line and easy to bike for a commute," Long says. And games at the Big House are about 1.5 miles away, also a doable walk or bike ride.
