Mid-century Colonials and ranch-style homes in Vernon Downs
"Vernon Downs has a mix of ranch and two-story homes built in the 1950s and 1960s," says local realtor Veronica Long. While brick ranch-style houses are the primary options, a handful of Colonial-style homes can be found in Vernon Downs' residential landscape. Homes are on wide streets where local joggers and cyclists have plenty of room for recreation. Residents also live in condos that are near commercial centers and thoroughfares leading to downtown Ann Arbor. "This used to be more of a first-time buyer area," Long says. "But it has become more competitive over time, and as with most of the city, there is low inventory." Prices can start around $280,000 for a condo or ranch-style house and up to $550,000 for the same style of home with modern upgrades. The highest price point reaches above $700,000 for renovated or larger homes with four or more bedrooms.Sprawling green spaces in Mushroom Park and Dicken Woods Nature Area
Mushroom Park's classic playground setting is dotted with mushroom structures and small hills large enough for young children to sled down in the winter. Locals can stroll down a wooded path or listen to native songbirds in the Dicken Woods Nature Area. Greenview and Pioneer Nature Area celebrates local biodiversity and provides education about Southeast Michigan prairie, woodlands and native plant species thanks to the help of dedicated volunteer groups.High marks from Ann Arbor's public schools
According to Long, one of Vernon Downs' biggest perks is that students can be within walking distance of the elementary and high schools. Along with their accessibility, Dicken Elementary, Slauson Middle and Pioneer High schools have been awarded an A rating from Niche. Students at Dicken Elementary School can exercise their green thumb through the natural classroom and garden on campus, which is used for harvesting produce. Pioneer High School is also renowned for its extracurriculars, with 20 state championship wins for its women's track and field team and award-winning theater and music programs.Cheering on the Wolverines and other local sports teams
Residents cheer on the Wolverines with their neighbors in Michigan Stadium, the nation's largest stadium, appropriately called The Big House. Budding athletes can see The Big House from the high school parking lot as they prepare to play tennis or compete under the Friday night lights at Hollway Field.Locals are minutes away from Downtown Ann Arbor
Locals are within three miles of Ann Arbor's downtown area, easily accessible thanks to bike lanes, public transit and major thoroughfares providing routes for workers to come home to Vernon Downs.Shopping at Oak Valley Center and dining at local restaurants
The residential streets and wooded natural areas quickly give way to convenient shopping right by Interstate 94. At the Oak Valley Center Shopping Mall, national franchises like Target and Meijer provide a range of household essentials. Driving along Ann Arbor-Saline Road leads to more organic shopping options, such as Whole Foods Market and Busch's Fresh Food Market. Locals frequent Ann Arbor franchises, like Zingerman's Roadhouse, which has maintained the original deli's commitment to fresh, quality ingredients. The locally owned Dalat Restaurant is a great place to find authentic Vietnamese cuisine, from flavorful pho to fresh spring rolls. Vernon Downs residents typically have to drive or cycle to their favorite eateries. Still, downtown Ann Arbor's restaurant spread is just three miles away from the community, close enough for last-minute dinner plans.
