Contra Loma
Suburban Neighborhood in Antioch, California
Contra Costa County 94509, 94565
A mix of homes, old and new
The neighborhood offers a wide variety of housing styles. Midcentury ranch styles and split-levels intermingle with contemporary homes with Mediterranean Revival touches like red-tiled rooftops, stucco exteriors and arched windows and doorways. The neighborhood’s residential subdivisions were built in the 1950s, and new construction is under way. Manicured lawns, lush landscaping, large driveways and mature oak and palm trees are a common sight here. Smaller, older homes list for around $400,000 to $550,000, while new builds can list for between $600,000 to nearly $1 million. “In Antioch, you probably get the best bang for your buck in Contra Loma,” says Realtor Diana McGee of BHG Real Estate, who is a longtime Antioch resident.Public parks and hiking trails
Community parks and green spaces are a major perk for residents of Contra Loma. “You’re about a mile away from Mount Diablo, and there are trails accessible from the neighborhood that will take you right into Contra Loma Regional Park,” McGee says. Contra Loma Regional Park’s meadowy hillsides are a brilliant shade of green in the spring and summer months before transforming into a straw-yellow color in the fall and winter. The park is a popular spot for hiking, picnicking, fishing and boating. Locals can also enjoy the outdoors at Chichibu Park, a 5-acre greenspace with a playground, tennis court, meadows and a picnic area, or swing by Gentrytown Park for a pickup game of baseball. Golfers tee up at Lone Tree Golf & Event Center, an 18-hole course with fairways and greens that wind through rich, coastal scenery.Public schools close to home
Young students can start their education at Turner Elementary School, which earns a C grade from Niche, or Mission Elementary School, which earns a C-plus. Park Middle School serves sixth through eighth-grade students and gets a C. Teens then move on to B-rated Antioch High School, which offers an array of innovative programs, including Engineering and Designing for a Green Environment, where students learn about sustainability and Earth-friendly energy solutions.Getting around the East Bay
Contra Loma is bordered by State Route 4, a major regional commuter route that connects with highways like Interstate 680 in the west. It also provides a direct route to Stockton, California, about 40 miles east. San Francisco is about 45 miles away, but the Antioch Bay Area Rapid Transit station is close by, easing commute times. The nearest hospital is Sutter Delta Medical Center, located less than a mile away.Shop at Somersville Towne Center
There are several shopping plazas in Contra Loma. Somersville Towne Center is an indoor shopping mall surrounded by small commercial strips. The mall features a Smart & Final grocery store, a 24-Hour Fitness gym and a plethora of retailers, apparel shops and restaurants. Popular local restaurants include Kabul Restaurant and Market, where locals can indulge in authentic Afghan cuisine, and Falafel Town, a Mediterranean Halal-style restaurant. Groceries and everyday essentials are available throughout the neighborhood at major grocery chains like Lucky and Raley’s. Big box stores like Costco, Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement are just a short drive away.
