Arcadia is an industry town in a rural county
Although it’s the largest city in rural Trempealeau County, Arcadia has a decidedly small-town feel. Seated along the Trempealeau River, the town’s economy revolves around the local manufacturing industry, particularly Ashley Furniture Industries, which is headquartered in Arcadia. The local Pilgrim’s Pride poultry processing plant also employs a large chunk of the town’s working-age population. “I think the best thing about living here is how community-oriented it is,” says city planner and Arcadia native Michael Schweisthal. “There are a lot of jobs and a lot of nice scenery, but what defines Arcadia, in my opinion, is how friendly people are. And for people moving here, it’s easy to get to know people. It’s easy to get to know the whole town.”

A busy and growing housing market
Home styles available in and around Arcadia include farmhouses, bungalows, cottages and ranch-style homes. The population has grown substantially over the last couple of decades, so newer homes are easier to find than in many small towns. Large yards are common throughout town, and homes in the outskirts often come with an acre or two attached. Most homes sell for between $120,000 and $250,000. “There’s actually a zero vacancy rate in Arcadia right now,” says Schweisthal. “The population has been growing for a while now, so we’re seeing a fair amount of new development around town. The Wisconsin Department of Administration projects Trempealeau County to have the second-highest growth rate of all the counties in Wisconsin over the next 25 years, so we’re looking into ways to size up.”

Trempeleau River flooding
Following Trempeleau River flooding in 2010 and 2017, in 2020 the Army Corps of Engineers began a $37 million project to protect residents from future floods. While flood risk has been partially mitigated for many homes in central Arcadia, potential homebuyers in the area should assess flood risk before buying.
Downtown Arcadia punches above its weight
Arcadia serves as a retail and cultural hub for a large portion of Trempealeau County. Most shops and restaurants are located in Arcadia’s traditional Main Street downtown area. The community’s walkable downtown is known for its outsized nightlife scene and impressive array of Mexican restaurants. Oasis Bar & Grill, located in what used to be Riverview Lanes, offers bowling and highly rated Mexican and American food. A few larger stores, including the local supermarket, can be found along state Route 93 on the east side of town.

Memorial Park is the town's standout park
Arcadia offers considerably more public green space than most towns of its size. Longstanding parks like Schank Park and Rudy Klink Deer Park offer playgrounds and athletic fields. But the main green space in town is Memorial Park, which has benefited from sizable donations from Ronald Wanek, the founder of Ashley Furniture, and his family. Over the years, the Waneks have helped fund the park’s Memorial Amphitheater and Kids’ Kingdom playground, and commissioned multiple sculptures for the park’s Soldiers’ Walk. The aquatic center on the east side of the park houses the local swimming pool, while just across the road, the Wanek Center houses community athletic facilities and the local public library.

Ashley for the Arts draws huge crowds every summer
Ashley for the Arts, a three-day music and arts festival founded by Ashley in 2009, takes over Memorial Park each August, drawing nearly 50,000 visitors. The city needs temporary infrastructure, like a portable cell tower, to handle the crowds.
Arcadia public schools
The public schools are overseen by the Arcadia School District. Arcadia Elementary and Arcadia Middle School both have C grades on Niche. Arcadia High School has a C-plus rating and offers dual enrollment courses through partnerships with University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and University of Wisconsin River Falls.
Located near downtown, Arcadia Elementary School serves the community’s youngest learners.
Arcadia Middle School has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1.
Arcadia High School offers dual enrollment courses and has a track and football field on campus.

It's a bit of a drive to the nearest cities
State highways 93 and 95 meet in town and carry most truck and commuter traffic north to Eau Claire and south to La Crosse, or east-west toward Neillsville, respectively. There’s no regular public transit; travel is mostly done by car. La Crosse, the nearest large city, is roughly 45 miles away, and it’s about 130 miles to the Twin Cities. La Crosse Regional Airport offers flights to Chicago, but locals often prefer to fly out of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
