Music and arts take the stage after dinner downtown
The development of the downtown area started south of the railroad tracks to Sigwalt Street. Live entertainment venues like Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, a professional theater company that's recently performed Rock of Ages and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Hey Nonny is a combination gastro pub and music venue, known for its menu of farm-to-table dishes and performances by local bands and artists. Big Shot Piano Bar & Restaurant is another combination live music venue and eatery. Show tunes, classics and contemporary are performed along with interaction with the audience. It’s only been happening for a few years, but Arington Alfresco has become a popular summer event in downtown Arlington Heights. The program started as a way to help businesses struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic. “They closed the streets and offered outdoor dining," Duchek says. "It was so popular that the event happens every summer from May through September.” It happens over a one-block section at the corner of Vail Avenue and Campbell Street. That’s in the area of Harmony Park, which is the site of a Thursday evening summer concert series from June through August. Autumn Harvest, which takes place on the first Saturday in October at North School Park. The event features a petting zoo, a scarecrow decorating competition and live music. Christmas starts with a tree lighting ceremony at North School Park, while Harmony Park has live reindeer and ice carvers.Penthouse condos, new townhomes and vintage Victorians
The main downtown area features condos above shops. “These attract young people who want to be close to downtown and within walking distance of the train station,” Duchek says. “But, older people are also buying them when they downsize.” Condo prices are generally between $150,000 and $600,000, but some penthouse condos reach above $1 million. Outside the immediate downtown area, , farmhouses, bungalows and Victorian-style homes from the late 1800s to the early 1900s with farmhouses, Craftsman-style bungalows and Victorian provide more space and privacy. Prices vary with smaller homes from $300,000 to $600,000, while larger properties over 3,000 square feet reach up to $1.2 million. “There are some newer homes that have been built, and the village design commission makes sure that the style of the new house is consistent with the existing classic designs,” Duchek says. Festival Park has a playground, a picnic shelter and a gazebo that has been the site of weddings. At North School Park, locals have used the amphitheater there for wedding ceremonies. The scenic landscaping, which also includes a fountain adorned with flowers, has also inspired locals to stage graduation and birthday photoshoots. Depending on where school children live in the central Arlington Heights area, they could attend either Oliver-Mary Stitt School or Windsor Elementary, both get an A-minus grade from Niche and serve kindergarten through fifth grade. Middle schoolers can attend South or Thomas Middle Schools, which get B-plus grades. All the schools feed into one of three high schools, which receive an A-plus grade. John Hersey, Prospect or Rolling Meadows High Schools. They’re all part of the Township High School District 214, rated the 12th best school district in Illinois out of more than 400 districts. The Metra commuter rail station is in the downtown area, providing service to downtown Chicago on the Union Pacific Northwest Line. The trip from Arlington Heights to the Ogilvie Transportation Center is about an hour. Interstate 90 is about 3 miles south, and it’s a 12-mile drive to O’Hare International Airport. Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights is the nearest medical center, about 2 miles to the south.Old Arlington Park site
For nearly 100 years, Arlington Park was a famous horse racing facility owned by Churchill Downs. It closed in 2021 and has remained vacant since. As of October 2024, the Chicago Bears own that piece of property, but it’s unclear whether there are solid plans to build a domed stadium as the new home of the NFL team. “I think whatever goes there will benefit the area,” Ducheck says. “Whether it’s a stadium or something else, something has to go there eventually.”
