Downtown Arlington
Shopping and dining along Abram Street
Most restaurants in Downtown Arlington will be found on the northeastern end by Abram Street. J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill is the local pub that was established in 1979 and is famous for its Irish nachos. The Flying Fish is a seafood restaurant specializing in fresh catfish, shrimp and oysters, while Grease Monkey is well known for its chicken-fried bacon burgers. Going south on Cooper Street leads to New York Eats, a halal joint that serves authentic gyros and falafel, as well as a Mexican restaurant in Taqueria Taxco. Local retail is focused around health, beauty and antique shops, while the closest grocery stores are Walmart, Kroger and Foodland Markets.Maverick activities around College Park
Several parks and recreational spaces are available around the University of Texas at Arlington. Doug Russell Park is a 12-acre park with trails that lead into the campus, while The Green at College Park has a walking loop and 3 acres of green space where students regularly hold special events. The Maverick Activities Center has a pool, climbing wall and indoor courts for soccer, volleyball and racquetball, and college sports fans can catch the latest games at College Park Center, Maverick Stadium or Allen Saxe Field. The Levitt Pavilion also welcomes thousands of visitors annually through its free concert series. “They built this large, grassy area with an auditorium across from city hall that brings in a lot of people,” Mathews says. “They’ll have a lot of live events, music and food trucks throughout the summer.”Student apartments, traditional homes and townhomes
Most residents in Downtown Arlington live in student housing, with rates ranging from $700 to $3,000 a month. “There’s a lot of apartments downtown,” Mathews says. “Once you get a little wider, you’ll see more single-family homes in the larger area.” One-story traditional houses will have less than 1-acre lots with prices ranging from $200,000 to $400,000, while larger modern farmhouse-style and townhomes will be pricier between $400,000 and $750,000.A diverse school district next to UT Arlington
Besides the local university, Downtown Arlington is also zoned for Arlington ISD, which earns a B-plus on Niche and is considered one of the most diverse school districts in the state. Speer and Webb Elementary are local to the community and respectively earn C and C-plus ratings on Niche, while Shackleford Junior High earns a B. The K-12 pathway ends at Lamar High School, which earns a B.Public transportation between the university and downtown
Downtown Arlington is 15-20 miles between Dallas and Fort Worth, with Interstate 30 providing a direct route to both major cities. MavMover buses take students around the 420-acre campus, while Via Transportation shuttles provide limited transportation off-campus. Both the downtown and university areas are walkable and bikeable, with Veo scooters and bikes available to rent for students and faculty. The Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital is open 24 hours, while the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is around 14 miles north.
