Suburban comforts overlooking the lake in Arlington

Well-appointed suburban homes overlook the water in Lake Arlington, the sprawling community on the western end of Arlington. Located just 12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth and 30 miles from downtown Dallas, Lake Arlington has well-rated public and private schools, lakefront recreation and proximity to major venues like AT&T Stadium. These conveniences, paired with spacious homes on generously sized lots, make the area popular for families and commuters.

Classic ranch-style homes to custom waterfront estates

Several established subdivisions, such as Enchanted Lake Estates and Shorewood, have large brick homes on substantial lots near the water. "The houses on the water are always a little nicer, a little pricier," says Kelsey Hicks, Arlington native and Realtor at Austin Realty Consultants. "Almost all of the homes in those neighborhoods are custom." Many of the higher-end homes in Lake Arlington have inground swimming pools, private boat docks and at least 3,000 square feet of living space. These properties can start around $500,000 and reach up to $2 million. However, many properties in Lake Arlington's winding subdivisions feature more modest builds, including brick ramblers with two-car garages and ranch-style houses usually priced between $200,000 and $400,000. Lake Arlington has a CAP Index crime score of 2, lower than the national average of 4.

School choice in the Arlington Independent School District

Several elementary, middle and high schools in the Arlington ISD serve the community. Some students may begin at Ditto Elementary, a kindergarten through sixth-grade school with an A-minus rating from Niche, before continuing to A-minus-rated Young Junior High School and A-rated Martin High School. Martin High has about 3,700 students and a well-regarded STEM Academy, where students can choose among pathways such as computer science, biomedical science and engineering. Hicks notes that Arlington now offers school choice, meaning students can transfer to any of the 76 schools in the district if there is space. However, buses are typically only available to students attending the schools they are zoned for. This area also has charter and private school options, such as The Oakridge School, an A-plus-rated private K-12 facility.

Parks along Lake Arlington, plus a public golf course

The lakeside Bowman Springs Park has a boat ramp and fishing pier, as well as a playground and picnic shelters. Also along the lake, Richard Simpson Park has its own boat ramp and a newly built event center with striking modern design elements. Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden is in the community off Lake Arlington Dam. This nearly 3-acre site is full of native plants and functions as a spillway area during rare flooding events. Next to the dam, the public Lake Arlington Golf Course has 18 holes on gently rolling fairways lined with trees.

Nearby chain and local restaurants, plus major entertainment venues

Locals can pick up groceries at Albertsons and Kroger on the eastern side of the neighborhood. There are several churches, such as Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and More Church, as well as familiar chains like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. Colter's Texas Bar-B-Q is among the locally owned shops nearby serving regional favorites. Locals enjoy beef brisket and spare ribs smothered in sauce in this cozy spot decked out with American flags and Texas-themed wall decor. Lake Arlington residents are less than 9 miles west of major entertainment and event venues in Arlington, such as the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys NFL team, and Six Flags Over Texas, a theme park with over a dozen roller coasters.

Driving to Fort Worth and Dallas on Interstate 30

Interstate 30, just north of the neighborhood, takes drivers east to downtown Dallas and west to downtown Fort Worth. Arlington does not have a bus or light rail system, meaning residents must drive to most destinations outside the neighborhood. Arlington does offer Via, an on-demand ride-sharing service that allows travelers to get anywhere in town for $5 or less. "It's a little network of minivans that will pick you up and take you where you want to go," Hicks says. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is 20 miles northeast, and Medical City Arlington is a major hospital only 5 miles away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
