Quiet suburban living in North Arlington
Homes ranging from simple brick ranches to extravagant modern builds mingle among the rolling hills and mature trees of Donaldson Run. Homes in the neighborhood are generally spread out, but some properties have even more privacy, tucked away in the woods and sometimes overlooking the Washington Country Club golf course. Either way, Donaldson Run is popular among homeowners looking for space in a quiet, suburban environment that's still a short drive to Washington, D.C. and Arlington’s more bustling neighborhoods. “Donaldson Run is popular for its nice suburban location,” says Betsy Twigg, Associate Broker with McEnearney Associates. “A lot of why Arlington is popular for right now is walkability, and you can walk through the neighborhood, but not really walk anywhere. So, [Donaldson Run] is more prestigious, but the pricing might be similar to more walkable neighborhoods like Westover.”
Donaldson Run Recreation Association
The Donaldson Run Recreation Association, a swim club just off Potomac Overlook Regional Park, is a popular neighborhood attraction with swim and dive teams. The club also hosts community events for members, including picnics on Memorial, Independence and Labor days and family nights with water games and ice cream. According to the Donaldson Run Recreation Association’s website, the waiting period is seven to nine years for a full voting membership and four to five years for a summer membership. That said, if a member sells their home alongside their pool membership, the new homebuyer gets bumped to the top of the waitlist (but is not immediately guaranteed a spot). “Someone can sell their membership with their house, and it could be the difference between selling your house fast or not,” Twigg says. “It’s very much part of the culture. It’s all about the kids and the swim team.” Alternatively, residents can join the Knights of Columbus Swimming Pool, about a mile west of Donaldson Run. The pool does not have a waitlist, but spots fill up fast during registration, which opens on February first at 10 AM each year.
Potomac Overlook Regional Park
Potomac Overlook Regional Park is adjacent to the neighborhood. Here, residents can explore the trails and catch views of the Potomac River. Set on 67 acres, the park has a nature center and birds-of-prey enclosure, where naturalists offer tours, talks and summer camps. Residents can access Potomac Overlook Regional Park via the walking and biking trail spanning the neighborhood from Reinsch Library on the west to Zachary Taylor Park on the east. Tributaries A and B stem from Donaldson Run, a tributary of the Potomac River that runs through the neighborhood. These tributaries have been the subjects of local restoration projects to maintain and restore the waterways, including efforts to reduce erosion and increase water quality. Locals also enjoy hanging out at Cherrydale Library, which hosts activities like family story times and book clubs for adults.
Washington Golf and Country Club
The Washington Golf and Country Club is Donaldson Run’s northern border. Founded in 1893, this private club has been called the “Club of Presidents,” with President Theodore Roosevelt, President William Howard Taft, President Woodrow Wilson, President Warren G. Harding and President Calvin Coolidge historically among its high-profile members. The county club has an 18-hole golf course and fitness facilities like a gym, tennis courts and pool.
Homes come in many styles
Homes in Donaldson Run are set back from the road and surrounded by mature trees. Due to the hilly landscape, many have stairs or winding driveways leading to the front door or garage. A lot of the homes in Donaldson Run were built in the 1940s and ‘50s, though a handful have been torn down and replaced with larger, modern homes. These older homes typically come in ranch, rambler and colonial styles and represent the neighborhood’s lower price range of around $900,000 to $1.2 million, while large contemporary homes represent the higher range of $1.5 million to $3 million or more. However, “not all the homes in Donaldson Run are grand,” Twigg says. Homebuyers can also find Cape Cods, split levels, Tudor revivals, townhouses, and residences that incorporate a mix of design elements.

Driving from Donaldson Run and airport noise
Donaldson Run is less than 5 miles northwest of the National Mall, accessible by car via George Washington Memorial Parkway. Without traffic, the drive is less than 10 minutes.
