One of Arlington's few true suburbs
Dover Crystal is primarily a residential neighborhood in north Arlington, Virginia, distinguishing itself from much of the with its deeply suburban atmosphere. Where much of Arlington is condos and townhouse rows along tight, urban streets, Dover Crystal has single-family homes resting on stretched lawns, with sidewalk space and broader roads. Residents may not have retail or dining within the neighborhood, but there is simple access to George Washington Memorial Parkway, locally called GW Parkway, which rests to the north. Carol Temple, a longtime Arlington local and real estate agent with Coldwell Banker, says, “There’s not a lot of turnover in Dover Crystal, so people really like it, but it also means people don’t get a chance to move there often.”
Get a cold cut sub and wine at The Italian Store
Although it might look like a regular grocery store on the outside, the locally loved Italian Store at Lyon Square is a big deal to residents. Just a mile east, The Italian Store offers general groceries, a variety of wines, deli meats and grab-and-go subs. There’s also a Safeway less than a mile south of Dover Crystal for more grocery options. Residents can head next door from the Safeway to get dinner at Pines of Florence, a second-generation Italian restaurant serving pasta dishes and stuffed salmon entrees with handcrafted desserts to end a night out. They also exclusively use halal meat for all their dishes. For expansive shopping options, residents can drive 2 miles east to the standalone stores that make up Courthouse or 2 miles south to the shops and diners of Ballston Quarter, with over 50 retailers to choose from.

Residents can head to Georgetown for fun
Residents can visit locales like Georgetown, given that they’re only a short drive along Spout Run Parkway to some of the area’s finest amenities. “The locals love the proximity, and many spend their weekends there. It’s such an easy drive if you’re in this area, and you save a lot of time commuting,” says Cabell Fooshe, a McLean area Realtor with Keller Williams. Georgetown is filled with upscale shops to browse through and is considered one of the trendier neighborhoods in DC.

Variety of upscale homes on large lawns
Home values in Dover Crystal run higher than average for the area, with a market exclusively filled with detached single-family homes that start around $1.2 million and go up to $3 million, varying by the home’s square footage, age and lot size. Temple says, “Home styles are all over the board. Not a tremendous amount of rebuilding. There’s a handful of new stuff from developers, lots of remodeling and add-ons, but not much movement.” What Dover Crystal sacrifices in walkable sidewalks, it makes up for in larger lot sizes. The homes reflect various midcentury designs, with many postwar brick ramblers, Greek Revivals, colonials and newer Craftsman and Traditional style homes built within the last ten years. The streets showcase many cul-de-sacs with trees that give the neighborhood a secluded feel. Many homes are extravagant and luxurious, with luxe exterior features like Palladian windows, sweeping front yards and colorful flower gardens.
GW Parkway, Reagan Airport and the metro within 6 miles of home
Temple says, “Dover Crystal residents are vehicle dependent. You can’t really walk to anything from there. The great attraction is you can be on the parkway in a minute. It’s close to the river so planes come over the neighborhood, and plane noise is there.” GW Parkway is north of Dover Crystal, and residents can take it to Arlington’s riverside points of interest, like Arlington National Cemetery, Gravelly Point Park, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Court House metro station is 2 miles from Dover Crystal residents and runs along the Orange and Silver lines for access through much of the D.C. metro area. Residents can also drive to DC in under 5 miles.
