Cottages and new builds coexist in Old Dominion
Most houses in Old Dominion were built between the 1930s and ‘40s. Cherry blossom trees dot the front lawns of Cape Cod cottages. Red-brick Colonial Revivals and American Foursquares often sit on lots of around 6,500 square feet. The neighborhood also has a few new builds, including modern farmhouses and Craftsman-style bungalows from the 2020s. Houses typically have three to six bedrooms and driveways, though street parking is still common. Prices tend to be higher than Arlington’s average $800,000 selling price. Older houses can cost between $1 million and $1.2 million, while newer houses can reach $1.5 million.Hiking at Potomac Overlook Regional Park and proximity to Virginia’s oldest country club
Oak and tulip poplar trees cover the 70-acre Potomac Overlook Regional Park, 2 miles northeast of the neighborhood. The park hosts numerous events at its James I. Mayer Center for Environmental Education, like pumpkin carving workshops during Halloween and year-round classes about native animals. Parkgoers can also hike the hilly terrain, enjoying views of the Potomac River and downtown D.C.’s skyline. The park’s mile-and-a-half-long path connects to The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, a 900-mile hiking and biking network stretching between Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains.Considered the oldest country club in Virginia, Washington Golf & Country Club has been around since 1893, though it has only been at its current location, less than a mile north of Old Dominion, since 1908. Birch and red maple trees line the 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross. Separate lounges for men and women fill the Georgian Revival-style clubhouse, while tennis courts and a swimming pool sit outside. With past members including Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, the club has also earned the nickname “Chosen Playground of Presidents.” And this prestige makes it difficult to join. “I’ve never known anyone that’s gotten in. I think the waitlist is a few years long,” Benson says.
Highly ranked Arlington Public Schools
Children can attend Discovery Elementary School and Williamsburg Middle School, both earning A grades from Niche. They may continue to A-plus-rated Yorktown High School, which offers Advanced Placement classes in photography, Chinese and economics. Each school is located over a mile from the neighborhood, and Benson says kids typically take the bus to school in this area.Marymount University is nearby
A combination of classical revival and all-glass contemporary-style buildings cover Marymount University’s 20-acre campus, less than a mile north of Marymount University. The Catholic college has over 30 undergraduate degree programs, including nursing, business and cybersecurity. Despite Old Dominion’s proximity to the school, Benson says students do not impact the Old Dominion neighborhood. “Marymount is a very tiny school. There are just over 4,000 students, and they have to live on campus for all four years. The kids aren’t known for partying. They all go into D.C. for that.”Several ways to reach D.C.
Though most residential streets in Old Dominion have sidewalks, the community is convenient for other types of travel. Driving south on Virginia State Route 120 connects to Interstate 66, making downtown D.C. a 7-mile drive east. Downtown D.C. is also accessible via an equidistant drive on Langston Boulevard. Benson warns that traffic may be delayed on both routes. “Driving from downtown during rush hour can easily take over 30 minutes,” she says. “Especially when you’re crossing over the Memorial or Roosevelt Bridge. I’ve sat on both of those for what feels like hours.” The nearest Metro station is Ballston-MU in downtown Arlington, 2 miles south of the neighborhood. It follows the orange and silver lines, taking passengers into the city with a half-hour-long trip. Several Arlington Transit bus stops and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops are in the neighborhood. Virginia Hospital Center is a mile south of the neighborhood, while the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and The Pentagon are about 7 miles to the southeast.Breakfast at Metro 29 Diner, shopping at The Crossing Clarendon
Bill’s Ace Hardware, a CVS and several locally owned restaurants line four-lane Langston Boulevard, which run along the neighborhood’s southern edge. Freshly baked pastries, thick French toast and other breakfast items are on the menu at Metro 29 Diner, housed in a stainless-steel Art Deco-style storefront since 1995. Harris Teeter on Harrison Street is the closest grocery store, just a mile west. Benson says locals also frequent other Arlington shopping centers. “Arlington is kind of known for its shopping centers in general,” she says. “You’re basically close to a mall wherever you live. Ballston [Quarter] and The Crossing Clarendon are two popular outdoor malls that are really close to Old Dominion.” Ballston Quarter, 2 miles south, offers a Regal Cinemas movie theater and local chain restaurants like Compass Coffee, while The Crossing Clarendon, 3 miles east, has stores like Apple and Crate & Barrel.
