An active lifestyle in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Asheville is known for its nearby mountain hikes and grand vistas, and Beaverdam is no exception. Located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Beaverdam offers its residents easy access to the outdoorsy lifestyle. Craven Gap Trail, an out-and-back hiking route that joggers and dog-walkers often frequent alongside the parkway, leads to the gorgeous Haw Creek Valley Overlook five miles away. In Lake View Park, Beaverdam Creek empties into Beaver Lake. Locals enjoy catch-and-release fishing from the pier, canoeing across the placid lake and strolling the boardwalk trails that traverse the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary.Home styles follow the landscape
Along the quiet, narrow residential lanes at the bottom of the valley, lush woodland lends homeowners a sense of privacy. The forested streets feature a mix of home styles including ranches and bungalows, which sell between $500,000 and $1 million. Meanwhile, new construction townhouse developments have popped up alongside the original homes, often selling between the mid-$400,000s and mid-$500,000s. Gated communities such as Beaverdam Run and Town Mountain Preserve sit further up Beaverdam Road, where winding mountain drives open up to contemporary Craftsman-style homes. Closer to the ridge on long private driveways, luxurious hillside estates are often priced between $1 million and $2 million but can reach as high as $3.5 million.Artistic appreciation in Asheville
Much of the neighborhood is part of the Beaverdam Valley Neighborhood Association, which facilitates social gatherings for the community. The Beaverdam Studio Tour allows visitors to explore the studios of artists and craftspeople who call the neighborhood home. Beaverdam may feel secluded deep in the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but residents of also have easy access to the arts and energy of Asheville. “Downtown After 5 is a popular art and music event,” says Emily Wareham, a Realtor with Asheville Realty Group. “It’s held one Friday a month during the warm months, that’s really fun. There’s a downtown farmers market, all kinds of culinary events that happen throughout the year.” Beaverdam also boasts a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.Easy access to local businesses in Grace and downtown
Residents can do their grocery shopping in the nearby Grace neighborhood at The Fresh Market, a short five-minute drive from Beaverdam. Also located in Grace, the unique Gravelo Workshop both serves coffee and services bikes. Locals frequent Rye Knot, a brewery and distillery that features high-end dinner options along with more traditional pub fare, and 828 Family Pizzeria for New York-style pies. For those willing to travel 10 minutes further, downtown Asheville hosts many artisanal eateries and boutiques.Good grades for local schools
Beaverdam is located in the highly regarded Asheville City School District. While the district allows for open enrollment for elementary schools, many students attend Ira B. Jones Elementary in the nearby Grace neighborhood. The school receives a B-plus grade from Niche. Kids then move on to Asheville Middle School, which also records a B-plus, while Asheville High School receives an A-minus grade. Asheville High has been rated one of the top 10 public high schools in North Carolina for athletics.Slow mountain drives and speedy routes downtown
While the neighborhood is set on the rolling slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Beaverdam offers a quick drive to the Asheville city center via Merrimon Avenue. “You feel like you’re in the wilderness, but it’s only 10 minutes to downtown,” Greiner says. The area’s bus system — Asheville Rides Transit, or ART — provides another route to head downtown. At the eastern edge of Beaverdam, the Blue Ridge Parkway runs atop the mountain ridge, offering a scenic drive especially known for its autumnal splendor.
