A vibrant community long before the River Arts District

The neighborhood has a rich history – many homes date back to the early 1900s – though urban renewal during the last century displaced many longtime residents. Today, Southside communities are actively engaged in rebuilding what was lost through local activism, community programming and vibrant family festivals.

New recreational facilities for Southside residents
Within the last couple years, the City of Asheville has responded to community requests to invest in neighborhood recreation space. Aston Park recently unveiled a new disc golf course, adding to existing amenities such as a playground, tennis and basketball courts and paved walking trails. Construction on the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center completed in 2023, with a new gym, multipurpose rooms, a pool and outdoor basketball courts. “We have people who come down in the community at all times to come shoot and have fun,” says Chris Leamon, the center’s facilities supervisor. “During the evenings and the weekends, sometimes this place is packed out.” Leamon says he has seen an increase in community participation since the center has reopened with expanded programming. The summer wrestling program is especially popular. “A lot of kids who didn’t get to participate last year were very excited to see we’ll be having it again this year,” Leamon says. “I think that’s one of the most successful programs that we have started since the gym has opened.”
The first playground ever purchased by the City of Asheville was in 1916 at Aston Park.
