Semi-rural suburb with large lots outside Ashland
Winslow is an unincorporated community on the outskirts of downtown Ashland that offers an almost rural ambiance. "One thing people like about living here is that it's outside of city taxes,”says Gennie Craigmiles, a resident and real estate agent with Geneva Properties. "Lot sizes are big enough to raise small animals like chickens." The community offers one-hundred year old cottages and midcentury architectural styles. While the area is basically all residential, its only a mile from downtown Ashland, which gives residents direct access to popular shopping malls.

Homes in Winslow range from wood-sided cottages built in the 1920s to split-level, traditional and ranch-style houses constructed through the 1980s. Prices range from $75,000 to about $160,000. Lot sizes vary based on address with some coming with half an acre, while others are smaller with less space between neighbors. "A lot of the homes in Winslow have a great older character to them,” says Diana Ruley, a Realtor with Dee's Realty who was born and raised in the area. “They have unique features like wide baseboards and built-in wooden cabinets in the bedrooms and hallways that are really pretty." Since Winslow is an unincorporated area, homeowners don't need to get approval before altering their properties. It has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. It ranks higher than the national average in all the CAP Index’s violent crime categories.

Ashland Independent Schools in the community
Students can attend Ashland Independent Schools, which is headquarters calls Winslow home and scores a B-plus on Niche. The site rates the school system as the second-best in the Huntington region. The school pipeline includes Hager Elementary, which earns a B rating from Niche. Ashland Middle receives a B-minus, while Paul G. Blazer High gets a B-plus from Niche and is rated as the second-best public high school in the Huntington Area.

Heading outdoors in the Ashland area
Armco Park is about 2 miles down Highway 60. The 75-acre greenspace includes a large playground, a disc golf course, and the Boyd County War Memorial. The park is also home to the Historic Iron Ore Hiking Trail, which leads visitors through several miles of wooded terrain and explores the area's historic connection to the steel industry. Golfers can find a public, 18-hole course 2 miles to the west at Sundowner Golf Course. Bellefonte Country Club is a private club for members only and has an 18-hole golf course, pool and clubhouse. In Downtown Ashland, residents can also find popular parks like the Port of Ashland, which offers views of the Ohio River. Central Park is spread over 47 acres and offers ball fields, several tennis courts and winding walking paths that pass through manicured, grassy areas. For an indoor option, the Ashland Area YMCA is outside of Winslow with a full fitness center, swimming pool and basketball courts.

Shopping and dining along Highway 60
One staple of the Winslow community is White's Custom Meats, a locally owned butcher shop that's been serving the area since 1968. "I love it , and I go every day,” Craigmiles says. “ A lot of people get their meat here because it's fresh from local farms and sold at a good price. Restaurants around Ashland even buy from them and advertise it to attract more customers." Several eateries are on Highway 60, like Tim Hortons and My Dad's Pizzaria, an Ashland-local chain with a shop on Blackburn Avenue. Ashland Town Center is an enclosed mall with clothing and beauty stores and a movie theater. Midtown Mall, a strip mall, is home to a Kroger and Big Lots.

Getting around the Winslow area
Winslow is still a mostly car-dependent community. Highway 60 passes directly to the east, allowing commuters to get the mile downtown in just 5 minutes. Ruley notes that traffic tends to be light in the area. The sixth largest hospital in the state of Kentucky, King's Daughters Hospital, is also the closest medical facility to Winslow and is in Downtown Ashland on 23rd Street. King's Daughters is one of the Ashland region's top employers, with multiple branches throughout the region. For flights across the East Coast, Huntington Tri-State Airport is serviced by two major airlines and is about 14 miles east of Winslow along Boy Scout Road.
Route 60 is one of the major highways going in and out of the Winslow community.
