Craftsman cottages and Prairie-style residences
The single-family properties in the Cottage District vary in age; some were constructed centuries ago, and some were only built in the last decade. “There are quite a few homes here that date from the early 20th century, mostly bungalows and Craftsman-style homes. A lot of those have been renovated, and they’re really super charming,” says Robynne Whitaker, a local Realtor with the NW Real Estate Team at Pattie Millen Group. While walking down the neighborhood's hilly streets, residents might notice that homes differ in housing styles and architectural features. “You can have a bungalow right next to a mansion; it’s not homogenous at all,” Whitaker says. Craftsman cottages with stone detailing, New Traditional homes from the 2000s and classic Prairie-style residences can all be found throughout the Cottage District. Many properties here feature driveways and garages, but parking on the street is also common. Single-family homes in this area cost between $450,000 and $900,000.

Fresh pasta at Osteria La Briccola
Less than half a mile away from the Cottage District is the Downtown Plaza , a popular retail and dining center situated next to Lithia Park and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival theatre complex. “One notable thing about the plaza is that there is a fountain there where people can drink Lithia water,” Whitaker says. Fountains connect to natural water sources infused with trace amounts of lithium oxide, or “lithia,” from the surrounding region. Whitaker recommends booking a dinner reservation at Osteria La Briccola, an upscale Italian eatery specializing in fresh pasta dishes. Other restaurant options in the plaza include vegetarian eatery Greenleaf Restaurant and The Black Sheep, a pub serving British fare like fish ‘n’ chips and meat pies. For groceries, residents can head to the Ashland Food Co-op at A Street and North 1st Street.

Shows typically start in April and run through mid-winter. “There’s also the Cabaret Theatre, which holds dinner shows and performances in a historic church,” Whitaker says. “And there’s a whole bunch of other small theatre companies throughout town.” Locals can head to nearby Southern Oregon University to catch an orchestra performance, or go to the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park to enjoy free summer concerts on Thursday nights.
