Craftsman cottages and Prairie-style residences
The single-family properties in the Cottage District vary in age; some were constructed centuries ago, and some were only built in the last decade. “There are quite a few homes here that date from the early 20th century, mostly bungalows and Craftsman-style homes. A lot of those have been renovated, and they’re really super charming,” says Robynne Whitaker, a local Realtor with the NW Real Estate Team at Pattie Millen Group. While walking down the neighborhood's hilly streets, residents might notice that homes differ in housing styles and architectural features. “You can have a bungalow right next to a mansion; it’s not homogenous at all,” Whitaker says. Craftsman cottages with stone detailing, New Traditional homes from the 2000s and classic Prairie-style residences can all be found throughout the Cottage District. Many properties here feature driveways and garages, but parking on the street is also common. Single-family homes in this area cost between $450,000 and $900,000.Birdwatching in North Mountain Park
Ashland Creek Park is a 7-acre dog-friendly outdoor space situated between Helman and Oak Streets at the heart of the Cottage District. Parkgoers can enjoy recreational amenities, including walking paths, a community garden, picnic areas and a playground. This neighborhood orders North Mountain Park; the park's eastern half features a nature center and a series of trails winding through botanical gardens, wildlife habitats and an amphitheater. In the western portion of North Mountain Park, locals can find several outdoor athletic fields, including two for baseball and one for soccer. Pavilions, picnic areas and ponds can also be found throughout the park.Early college credit programs at Southern Oregon University
Depending on their address, students in kindergarten through fifth grade can be zoned for either Walker Elementary or Helman Elementary School, both of which receive A-minus ratings. Ashland Middle and Ashland High School are also rated A-minus. At Ashland High School (AHS), students can enroll in Advanced Placement programs or earn college credit through the district’s partnership with Southern Oregon University, on the south side of town.Theatre performances at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Community events and activities near the Cottage District revolve around the arts: “In Ashland, you have artists, you’ve got musicians, and you can find live music pretty much seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Whitaker says. For award-winning theatre performances, locals can head to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which encompasses the Angus Bowmer Theatre, the Thomas Theatre, the Green Show Stage and the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. Shows typically start in April and run through mid-winter. “There’s also the Cabaret Theatre, which holds dinner shows and performances in a historic church,” Whitaker says. “And there’s a whole bunch of other small theatre companies throughout town.” Locals can head to nearby Southern Oregon University to catch an orchestra performance, or go to the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park to enjoy free summer concerts on Thursday nights.Bus services operated by the Rogue Valley Transportation District
Residents of the Cottage District have convenient access to Route 99 and Interstate 5. Both highways run through Ashland and travel north toward the nearby city of Medford, approximately 13 miles away. Medford is also where the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport is located. The Asante Ashland Community Hospital and its 24-hour emergency room are a 1-mile drive outside the neighborhood. The Rogue Valley Transportation District, or RVTD, operates three bus routes that travel through the Ashland area, which include 1X: Medford Ashland Express, 10: Ashland and 17: Ashland Circulator.Fresh pasta at Osteria La Briccola
Less than half a mile away from the Cottage District is the Downtown Plaza , a popular retail and dining center situated next to Lithia Park and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival theatre complex. “One notable thing about the plaza is that there is a fountain there where people can drink Lithia water,” Whitaker says. Fountains connect to natural water sources infused with trace amounts of lithium oxide, or “lithia,” from the surrounding region. Whitaker recommends booking a dinner reservation at Osteria La Briccola, an upscale Italian eatery specializing in fresh pasta dishes. Other restaurant options in the plaza include vegetarian eatery Greenleaf Restaurant and The Black Sheep, a pub serving British fare like fish ‘n’ chips and meat pies. For groceries, residents can head to the Ashland Food Co-op at A Street and North 1st Street.
