Idyllic suburb at the edge of Ashland's city limits
Near the Rogue Valley countryside along the northeastern edge of Ashland is the residential subdivision of Quiet Village, which lives up to its name. Sprawling farmlands and mountains sit directly north of the neighborhood, shielding it from urban noise even though downtown is just about a mile away. The suburban area has a handful of parks and natural areas, including Ashland Pond and Ashland Dog Park. Residential construction is ongoing, but the Ashland community and local government will only develop within the city limits to preserve the surrounding natural landscape. “I oftentimes see parents with their children riding bicycles to stores around town; there’s really an emphasis in this area on teaching the next generation about conservation and protecting our environment,” says Katherine Soditus, an Ashland native and principal broker with Real Estate Alliance & Lease.

Midcentury homes and contemporary new builds
Quiet Village’s winding roads and cul-de-sacs are lined with single-family homes. Its architecture includes everything from mid-century ranchers and bungalows to Craftsman-style residences and contemporary new builds that came online in the past decade. “There’s a kaleidoscope of housing styles here,” Soditus says. “The closer to the downtown area, the more you’ll find older Craftsman and Victorian homes. In the more suburban parts is where you’ll see a lot more modern construction.” Most homes here cost between $400,000 and $800,000, and more than half the area’s residential properties feature paved driveways and garages, although people also park their cars on the street. Pine trees, hedges and wildflowers pepper front yards, complimenting the rural surroundings. Roads are flat and level, even though the mountainous Rogue Valley encompasses the neighborhood.

Annual Halloween parade draws thousands
Every year, people come to Ashland for shows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which sits in the heart of downtown. The multi-theater venue starts its season in late spring and wraps up every year around midwinter. “The Shakespeare Festival is a legendary seasonal event with dozens of plays and performances that often attract global attention,” says Taylor Lore, a local broker with Coldwell Banker Pro West Real Estate. The city recognizes Halloween in late October by organizing a massive parade along Main Street. “Ashland’s Halloween Parade has been a staple event for decades; folks from all over the country come to celebrate and spectate,” Lore says. The parade has occurred every year since 1990 and draws thousands of participants.

The Breadboard serves country-style American fare in a retro diner interior. Residents can make the mile-long drive to shop at boutiques like Elder Apothecary and Tree House Books at the Downtown Plaza shopping center. The Ashland Food Co-op, a community-owned and operated grocery store, is also a 1-mile drive from Quiet Village. Grapes grow on vineyard trees in the rural areas surrounding the city. An actual European castle houses Belle Fiore Winery, which is 6 miles away. “Belle Fiore Winery is home to a 14th-century castle from Italy that was disassembled and literally shipped to Ashland piece by piece,” says Soditus.
