An Aspen Hill commuter suburb bustling with parks and nearby shopping centers
Suburban tranquility, commercial convenience and metropolitan ease define life in Hermitage Park, Aspen Hill’s core neighborhood. As kids walk along the wide, asphalt roads to Montgomery County Public Schools, they’ll pass midcentury houses and pocket green spaces, like the forested Strathmore Local Park. Chain grocery stores are in surrounding shopping strips, and cozy bars fill nearby downtown Wheaton. But even with these nearby hubs, the community is best known for its central location near commuter routes. “Maryland Route 97 is a straight shot south to Washington, D.C.,” says Colleen Smith, a Realtor with Samson Properties, who has sold several homes in the area. “The Glenmont Metro station is also on the highway.”
Hermitage Park teems with commuter convenience and pocket parks at the heart of Aspen Hill.

Hermitage Park is rental-heavy
Houses built between the 1960s and ‘70s line Hermitage Park’s winding asphalt roads. L-shaped ranch styles sit on lots dotted with ornamental shrubs, typically around 8,000 square feet. White oak and Japanese maple trees often shade gambrel roof split levels and driveways lead to one-car garages attached to Colonial Revivals. Four-to-five-bedroom single-family houses typically cost between $550,000 and $750,000, a range similar to a Montgomery County home’s average $600,000 selling price. Condos and townhouses usually sell in the $150,000 to $250,000 range. Renters make up over half the neighborhood, with complexes like the Hermitage Square Apartments on Hewitt Avenue and the Strathmore House Apartments on Bel Pre Road. There are also a few nursing homes and assisted living facilities here.
Many homes in Hermitage Park have additions, garages, and large driveways.

Plenty of nearby chain grocery stores and locally owned restaurants in downtown Wheaton
An Aldi is less than 2 miles east in Plaza del Mercado, a yellow, Spanish-style shopping strip home to chain restaurants like Subway and a few locally owned spots. For instance, a neon-lit crab welcomes patrons into Juicy Seafood, serving Cajun classics like boiled crawfish and shrimp covered in garlic butter sauce. Shoppers can also grab groceries at the Giant in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center, 2 miles west of the neighborhood. Stores like Michaels, Kohl’s and The Home Depot are in the same commercial corridor. Aspen Hill doesn’t have a downtown district, but locals can drive 3 miles south to quiet downtown Wheaton for more locally owned restaurants. “Downtown Wheaton isn’t a super busy area or anything, but The Limerick Pub is one of those places everyone in the area knows about,” says Adam Chasen, a Realtor with Compass Real Estate, who has sold several homes in Montgomery County. Patrons sip pints of Guinness as the brick fireplace crackles and folk musicians strum guitars at pub, known for its shepherd’s pie and extensive Irish whiskey menu.
Many Hermitage Park locals choose Lotte Plaza Market for their international ingredient needs.

Highly rated Montgomery County Public Schools
Kids can attend prekindergarten through second grade at Bel Pre Elementary School, graded an A-minus by Niche, before going to B-plus-rated Strathmore Elementary School for third through fifth grade. They may continue to B-rated Argyle Middle School and B-minus-graded John F. Kennedy High School, which offers Academy Programs in broadcast journalism, healthcare professions, and business administration. Though residential streets don’t have sidewalks, Smith says most schools are still walkable and families make use of the proximity. “You’ll see kids walking the elementary schools and the middle school, but the high school is a bit too far for that.”
J.F.K High School boasts a B rating from Niche.com.
Your students will learn from Montgomery county's best at Bel Pre Elementary.

Maryland Route 97 leads directly to D.C.
Though locals can take strolls to green spaces and schools, Hermitage Park is a broadly car-dependent community. Maryland Route 97 is just west of the neighborhood, making Washington, D.C., a 14-mile drive south. Maryland Route 185, about 2 miles east of the neighborhood, also leads to D.C., but Chasen says traffic is an issue on both highways. “I expect bumper-to-bumper traffic on every highway that leads to D.C.,” Chasen says. “It doesn’t matter if you take Route 97 or Route 185. Traffic is always awful.” The Glenmont Metro station is 3 miles north of the neighborhood, and it follows the Red Line, taking passengers to Union Station with a half-hour ride. There are a few Montgomery County bus stops in the area. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is less than 30 miles south, and Dulles International Airport is equidistant to the west. MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is the closest hospital, 7 miles north.
With the Montgomery County Transit System, you'll never miss an appointment in Hermitage Park.
Proximity to the Glenmont metro stop gives Hermitage Park many commuting options.

Forested hiking trails and easy access to Wheaton Regional Park
Several recreational hubs are within walking distance of Hermitage Park, including Strathmore Bel Pre Pool, a members-only facility at the heart of the neighborhood. White and blue lounge chairs surround the pool, where the Dolphin's swim team practices during the summer. Tennis balls whack against rubber courts in the paddleball complex. Named for the early 20th-century Artic explorer, Matthew Henson State Park is a 4-and-a-half-mile greenway spanning the neighborhood’s southern edge. Hikers and bike riders will trek hard surface paths and boardwalks passing by the rocky Turkey Branch Creek. The trail is shaded by black oak and pignut hickory trees, known to turn shades of gold and orange every fall. Just north of the neighborhood, a former 19th-century dairy farm is now the rolling, 18-hole golf course of the Argyle Country Club. Members can also play tennis on the clay courts, join youth swim teams at the swimming pool and work out in the clubhouse’s fitness center.
Even with these nearby recreation options, Wheaton Regional Park, 5 miles south of the neighborhood, is the area’s most popular green space. “People across the county visit the park because youth sports leagues play there,” Smith says. “After games, families will spend the entire day here because there’s so much to do.” The 538-acre park is divided into five distinct areas. Asphalt trails weave between bald cypress groves, wildflower fields and greenhouses at Brookside Gardens. Rescued animals like box turtles and hummingbirds live inside the Brookside Nature Center. A miniature red train drives kids around the Shorefield Area, also home to a carousel built in 1915. Horses graze fields outside the Wheaton Park Stables, where equestrians can take lessons and ride trails. Baseball bat cracks fill the air, and soccer balls fly into nets at the F. Frank Rubini Athletic Complex, which also has an indoor ice skating rink and an outdoor basketball court.
The trail at Matthew Henson State Park is well maintained by the county.
Many Hermitage Park residents frequent Brookside Gardens for their weekly dose of nature.
