Berkley Hills
Neighborhood in Athens, Georgia
Clarke County 30606
Three subdivisions make up Berkley Hills
Split-level and ranch-style homes from the 1960s and early '70s make up most of Berkley Hills proper. They measure 1,500 to 2,500 square feet and range in value from $250,000 to $350,000. In the neighboring Glenview subdivision, construction was divided into two phases. Phase one homes were built around 2020, costing between $550,000 and $700,000. Phase two housing development is ongoing. Houses in the Glenview subdivision have Lowcountry and Southern Gothic influences, with wrap-around porches, vaulted ceilings and gabled roofs. They measure 2,000 to 4,000 square feet. A few homes in Glenview measure over 4,000 square feet and cost over $900,000. The Townhomes at River Club is a gated subcommunity for renters only, home to many University of Georgia students. Townhomes offer three to four bedrooms, and each room is individually leased.Memorial Park has a zoo, fishing pond and more
Memorial Park is a 72-acre outdoor space about 2 miles away in Five Points. It has basketball courts, a playground, a pool and a fishing pond. The 1.25-mile Birchmore Trail cuts through the park's creeks, hardwood ravine and uphill climbs. The park is also home to Bear Hollow Zoo, where visitors can see river otters, American alligators, black bears and more. Zoo admission is free. Oconee Forest Park, about 4 miles away, has undeveloped trails and access to Lake Herrick.Niche ranks Athens Academy as one of the best private schools in Georgia
The Clarke County School District scores an overall B on Niche and serves nearly 12,500 students. Niche gives Timothy Road Elementary School a B on Niche and Clarke Middle School a B-minus. Clarke Central High School features a Freshman Academy, which helps graduating middle schoolers transition to high school through academic and emotional support. Niche ranks The Academy as the ninth-best private K-12 school in Georgia, giving the school an overall A-plus. The school is about 2 miles south of Berkley Hills.Navigating The Loop
ACC Transit serves a couple of bus stops along Timothy Road, but most residents drive to get around. The community borders the Inner Loop 10. "You're close to The Loop, which circles Athens," Knox says. "So if you had to get to another part of Athens, you could easily get there." Downtown Athens and the University of Georgia are about 5 miles north. St. Mary's Hospital is about 4 miles away. Atlanta is about 75 miles away, and the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is 78 miles away.Dining along Macon Highway
There are a couple of local spots to eat along Macon Highway, like George's Lowcountry Table. The southern-style restaurant serves down-home favorites like fried green tomatoes and shrimp. Plus, pimento cheese roasted oysters and classic crawfish etouffee are dinner favorites. Next door to George's, Butt Hutt BBQ has stuffed barbecue sandwiches and brisket baskets. Each basket comes with a side like mac n' cheese bites or fried pickles. Several grocery stores line Epps Bridge Parkway, about 4 miles away. Trader Joe's, Kroger and Walmart Supercenter are within a mile of one another.
