Southeast Clarke Park and Oconee Forest Park are equidistant from Green Crestwood. Southeast Clarke Park spans 135 acres about 3 miles northeast of the community. It has lighted soccer fields, baseball diamonds and walking trails. It’s also home to the Athens Clarke County Tennis Center, where residents enjoy programs and clinics to perfect their swing. The World of Wonder playground impresses with its three-story slide tower, a climbing rock wall and a rope web climber. The Wiggley Field Dog Park has three acres of land for pups to run off their leash. Oconee Forest Park is a 60-acre natural area about 3 miles west of the community. It has 1.5 miles of wooded walking trails that reach Lake Herrick, and cyclists hit the 1.2-mile mountain bike trail. The Clarke County School District scores an overall B on Niche and serves over 12,000 students. Cedar Creek is zoned for Barnett Shoals Elementary School and Gaines Elementary School, which Niche gives an overall B and C, respectively. Hilsman Middle School receives a B-minus on Niche. Cedar Shoals High School features several academic programs, including the Career, Technical and Agricultural (CTAE) program. This program helps students prepare for the workforce based on the emerging needs in the Athens Clarke County region. Drivers can usually avoid major highways when heading into downtown Athens by hopping on Barnett Shoals Road. Downtown and the University of Georgia are about 4 miles away. Piedmont Athens Regional and St. Mary’s Hospital are about 6 miles west. U.S. Route 78 travels west toward Atlanta, about 73 miles away. Barnett Shoals Road has several shopping centers, independent retailers and locally-owned restaurants. “This little stretch stays pretty busy,” Buril says. College Station Shopping Center features a Kroger and a few service businesses. Plus, it’s home to the eastside location of the Blind Pig Tavern, an Athens staple with jumbo buffalo wings and various specialty sandwiches. Georgetown Square is anchored by a Publix and has spots to get a haircut, manicure and tan. The Village at Cedar Shoals Shopping Center has an Aldi. Restaurant options range from early-morning favorites like Jittery Joe’s to dinner classics like Barberitos. Other nearby options hail from India with Taste of India to Thailand with Siri Thai Cuisine.
