A west Athens suburb that doubles as a popular shopping destination
Four shopping centers are all located within a mile of Oak Bend, home to national retailers, grocery stores and local restaurants. And that’s the pull – a Target, Walmart or Aldi trip less than a 10-minute drive if there’s no traffic. “This area is more commercialized,” says associate broker Michelle Farmer of Keller Williams Greater Athens. She’s sold homes across the region for nearly 20 years. “You have several big-box stores, plus it’s an easy drive to Five Points.” The community also features single-family houses and townhomes with large floor plans. Plus, Oak Bend is only a few miles from one of the highest-rated private schools in Georgia. “It’s also close to Athens Academy, which is an alternative to the public schools in the area.”

A wide variety of townhomes and single-family homes
Oak Bend has a couple of subdivisions with townhomes, single-family houses and condominiums. Townhomes and condos are available in The Highlands at Woodlake for prices between $250,000 and $350,000. In the Idlewilde subdivision, craftsman-style homes sit close together on lots under 5,000 square feet. The houses measure around 1,500 square feet and are priced between $330,000 and $400,000. The Colleton Oaks subdivision features contemporary colonial and new traditional homes built in the early 2000s. They primarily measure over 2,500 square feet with four bedrooms for prices between $400,000 and $550,000. Some of the community’s largest homes are in Telfair Place, where contemporary colonials measure 3,000 to 4,500 square feet for prices between $550,000 and $750,000.

Niche rated Athens Academy as a top 10 best private school in Georgia
The Clarke County School District serves nearly 12,500 students and scores an overall B on Niche. Oak Bend is home to Timothy Road Elementary School, which Niche gives a B and ranks among the top three best elementary schools in Clarke County. Niche gives Clarke Middle School a B-minus and Clarke Central High School an A-minus. Athens Academy, located about 5 miles outside Oak Bend, is an independent private school for kindergarten through 12th-grade students. In 2023, the Academy’s sports teams won over 50 state championships, and several students won national visual arts contests, like the Scholastic Gold Key Awards. Niche ranks the Academy among the top 10 best private schools in Georgia, giving them an overall A-plus.

Big-box stores flank Atlanta Highway
Oak Bend is home to a small shopping center accessible on Atlanta Highway. It’s anchored by a Target but also features JOANN Fabric and Crafts and GameStop. Atlanta Highway has more big-box stores, like Walmart Neighborhood Market and Aldi. Athens West Shopping Center features America’s Thrift Store, Big Lots, and a few spots to eat, such as Brett’s Restaurant. Clarke Crossing Shopping Center has several stores, like Academy Sports and Outdoors and Dollar Tree. There are a few restaurants along Timothy Road, like DePalma’s Italian Café. The restaurant serves pasta, like lasagna di Giorno, eggplant Florentine and pasta DePalma. Agua Linda serves authentic Mexican cuisine, like enchiladas de mole and torta loca.

A trip to the market at Bishop Park
Bishop Park is about 5 miles outside Oak Bend and is a hub of recreation and community events. Across its 33 acres are softball diamonds, first-come-first-serve basketball courts and a pool. Plus, there are tennis courts and a playground for the kids. The park is also host to the Athens Farmers Market. The market hosts local farmers and artists every Saturday morning. There’s live music and a children’s booth with various activities. The market hosts several events throughout the year, like a strawberry pie eating contest and a Halloween market. Ben Burton Park is not as busy. It sprawls across 32 acres along the Middle Oconee River and features a 1.4-mile trail and a boat launch.

Taking Atlanta Highway into downtown Athens
