Blair Villa-Poole Creek is a heavily industrial neighborhood in Southeast Atlanta that sits adjacent to the airport. “It used to be a really active neighborhood with stores and banks and everything,” says Shirley Nichols, the volunteer zoning representative for the city’s Neighborhood Planning Unit that represents the community. But starting in the 1980s, the airport bought out hundreds of homes and businesses that fell within its noise boundaries. Now, the only remaining residential section of the neighborhood is in the upper northeast corner. Blair Villa-Poole Creek is a mix of older residents, who have lived in the area for years, and families with young children. The neighborhood has an active community association, Southside Concerned Citizens. Coreen Dent, president of the association and a long-time resident, says the group just finished working with the city on a community development plan. “The vision for the community is to have more residences, new homes built, specifically workforce housing,” Dent says. The plan also calls for more restaurants, shops and family entertainment in the area.

Harper Park sits just across the street from the neighborhood’s residential area. It includes a skatepark and nature trails. Residents also use Rosel Fann Recreation Center, just north of the neighborhood. It has a pool and offers senior and teen programs, including aquatics programs and yoga classes. The community association holds an annual Fitness in the Park series in the spring, Dent says, rotating classes at different parks in the area.

A neighborhood elementary school and in-district transfer options
Children in the neighborhood are zoned for Heritage Academy, an elementary school that sits in the middle of the residential area. The school is rated a C on Niche. Then they head to the C-rated Long Middle School, before moving on to South Atlanta High School, which has a C-minus. Atlanta Public Schools has a choice program that allows parents to request transfers to any school within the district.

Dining in nearby Hapeville and driving to Kroger
The neighborhood borders the city of Hapeville, and many residents choose to drive less than 2 miles west to enjoy what Main Street Hapeville has to offer. Options include wings, seafood and Vietnamese cuisine, as well as Mexican food at Don Chon. Jonesboro Road also has some shopping and dining options, including barbecue and Southern fare. Residents usually go to Kroger on Cleveland Avenue or Moreland Avenue for groceries. “There’s not a walkable grocery store in the community,” Dent says. “Some people like that and some people don’t.” While some consider the area a food desert for this reason, others like it because it makes the area feel more suburban, she says.
