Castleberry Hill is a trendy place with a storied history
Bordered by the downtown area and adorned in bright murals, Castleberry Hill is as old as Atlanta, yet it's always offered something different. In the mid-19th century, it was home to snake oil sellers and functioned as a red-light district. During that time, its cotton and steel industries also contributed to the Civil War effort. Then, when the Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996, many of the then-closed manufacturing facilities were repurposed as lofts. All this informed Castleberry Hill's evolution into an urban, gritty, prestigious and historic place that's on the national register. At least, those are the adjectives Juli St George, a local Realtor and broker associate with Keller Williams Realty Intown Atlanta, uses to describe it. As Castleberry Hill shed its layers, it grew as a bastion for the arts and Black-owned businesses. It also developed a film legacy and was most recently used as the backdrop of the hit show "The Walking Dead."

Castleberry Hill's thriving commercial area
Castleberry Hill has a lively restaurant scene. Two cherished spots are No Mas! Cantina and the Asian-fusion joint Bottle Rocket Fine Food and Beverage, both on Walker Street. St George also notes that Paschal's Restaurant & Bar is practically an institution on Northside Drive and has served its soul food to Martin Luther King Jr and Aretha Franklin. From small bites at Esco Restaurant & Tapas to drinks at Atlantucky Brewing and lattes at Black Coffee, most spots are casual, but there is an upscale cigar bar called Fellaship.ATL. While St George says there are bodegas in Castleberry Hill, there aren't any grocery stores, but Walmart Neighborhood Market and Publix are just over a mile away. Locally owned businesses range from Off the Hook barbershop, Glam Station beauty salon, Peters Street Station art gallery and Kenny T's print shop. Between downtown and midtown, there are even more options, including Ponce City Market with around 40 chain retailers.
No Mas! Cantina is located in Castleberry Hill and serves authentic Mexican cuisine.

Loft living in Atlanta
"It has its own feel for sure. There aren't a lot of areas where it has this high of a concentration of lofts," St George says. Most have a rustic character as they've stood for nearly a century or more. Many are made from brick, and some from terra-cotta. Amenities are minimal, but some residences have rooftop patios and different degrees of luxury depending on when they were renovated. New developments like Lyric Lofts, one of the neighborhood's latest additions, are built to blend into the industrial area. Depending on square footage, new lofts can range from the high $200,000s to the mid-$700,000s. Established lofts are typically in the $200,000s to $300,000s. Some oversized lofts veer toward the million-dollar mark. Homeowners association fees are common and those seeking extra security can find gated communities. The streetscapes offer short, concrete setbacks and a few trees lining the roads. The railroad is still active in Castleberry Hill, and some residents hear the train pass through every night. St George says the neighborhood isn't prone to any extreme weather. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 10 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. The city works to prevent crime through its crime stoppers program, which offers an anonymous tip line citizens can use.

Surrounded by the growing entertainment options of downtown Atlanta
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons and huge concerts, is right next to the neighborhood. The FIFA World Cup will be hosted here in 2026, leading to increased development in the area. The Gulch is adjacent to the stadium and is being transformed into a $5 billion mixed-use venue called Centennial Yards that will feature a large domed screen for sports and entertainment viewing and millions of square feet devoted to commercial space and housing. Centennial Olympic Park pays homage to the 1996 Olympic Games and is less than a mile north. It's the site of the Georgia Aquarium and the SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel and hosts the city's Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival.

Castleberry Hill hosts an urban regatta
Castleberry Hill may be surrounded by city fun, but that didn't stop it from creating its own. The neighborhood is known for its second Friday Art Stroll, where locals take a self-guided tour through its galleries and eat from food trucks as live music plays. "It's a unique opportunity to see what up-and-coming and established artists are doing and feeling," St George says. No Mas! Cantina and Bottle Rocket Fine Food and Beverage sponsor the neighborhood's "urban regatta" every year. "There's no water in Castleberry Hill, so they convert bikes into boats, and it's fun for all ages," St George says. "Each year it gets bigger and bigger."

A 50 year tradition, the Atlanta Fair pops up twice a year nearby.

Castleberry Hill is a step for downtown
St George says cars aren’t a necessity here. Bus stops dot the main streets, and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train stations are just over a mile from the neighborhood. Besides that, the area is incredibly pedestrian-friendly. It’s a walk or a five-minute drive to the downtown area. Locals live north of I-20, which flows into I- 85. Grady Memorial Hospital is just over a mile west and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is around 10 miles south.
