Sturdy, brick ranch-styles in Chalet Woods
Chalet Woods is tiny, with just seven streets, half of which end in cul de sacs. Naturally, there's a limited number of houses and not many for sale at any given time. Brick ranch styles and split levels built in the 1960s peak from behind the greenery. Many settle on spacious lawns of nearly half an acre. Homebuyers can also find a few new homes built in a modern farmhouse style.Established homes in Chalet Woods typically range from the low to mid $200,000s to $300,000s. Dasher mentions it would cost someone twice as much to build them today. "Especially with those large columned [entrances], the four-sided brick and full basements," she says. New construction in Chalet Woods heads into the upper $500,000s.
Hiking and biking at Hampton-Beecher Nature Preserve
The Lionel Hampton Trail is just east of Chalet Woods, connecting locals to the 54-acre Hampton-Beecher Nature Preserve. The preserve’s partly-paved 4-mile trail system loops through rich forest crossed by Civil War trenches and streams. Wild strawberries and mushrooms sprinkle the grounds, and deer jump between trees. The trails connect to the Atlanta Beltline Westside Trail, which loops around the city’s neighborhoods, spanning 22 miles. Isabel Gates Webster Park is just north, offering outdoor fitness stations, a soccer field, a tennis court and a playground. The 125-acre Cascade Springs Nature Preserve is less than 3 miles away for more trails weaving through old growth trees, around artisanal streams and 250-million-year-old rocks.Young Middle School prioritizes mental health and wellbeing
Students in Chalet Woods attend Atlanta Public Schools. Many begin at Peyton Forest Elementary School before moving on to Young Middle School and Mays High School, all earning C ratings on Niche. Young Middle transformed a wing of its school into a “den” for students in 2020. “The Den,” the first of its kind in the state, offers holistic support from a team of experts trained to foster emotional, social, and basic needs and academic support. The den also features a “calm down” space where kids can process their emotions. Georgia offers school choice, opening any school in the district to students as long as it has space and has been in operation for four years.MARTA bus stops nearby
Chalet Woods is fairly pedestrian-friendly. MARTA bus stops line major roads just outside the neighborhood, giving commuters even more options. Interstates 20 and 285 are within a mile of the neighborhood and accessible from main roads. Grady Memorial Hospital is less than 8 miles away following I-20. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 13 miles south following either interstate.Celebrating local in Chalet Woods
Seeing friends at local restaurants is an everyday experience here. "There are certain [restaurants] that have been over there for so long that you just run into people," says Candice Hayes, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Intown Atlanta who's sold homes for six years. The closest local spots to grab a bite are A1 Soulfood and Cafe Buffalo Wing, just north, on Martin Luther King Junior Drive Southwest (MLK Jr. Dr. SW). Dollar Tree, fast food chains and local shops, including Bargain Wholesale, also line this road. Wayfield Foods Inc. is a mile and a half west for groceries. Less than 3 miles south, The Beautiful Restaurant is a popular meat and three that serves Southern classics. "It has that same style of food since 1979," Dasher says. "They still use regular old school sugar, and even in their vegetables and the way they make their mac and cheese, it's really original."Dasher adds that locals can get to MLK Jr. Dr. SW on foot in minutes. The Atlantic Station mall, with over 50 stores and restaurants, is 10 miles away.
