Why Collier Heights stands out as a landmark of Black history

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Collier Heights was founded in 1948 as Atlanta's first neighborhood designed by and for the city’s growing Black middle class. It has been home to history-makers like Martin Luther King Sr., Donald Hollowell and Christine King Farris. Many original residents still live in the neighborhood, keeping the area’s history alive. Today, Collier Heights is an affordable community that continues to attract a diverse population seeking a prime location near downtown.

What homebuyers will find in historic Collier Heights

Most of the split-level, ranch-style and midcentury modern homes in Collier Heights were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Some residences have been remodeled but still retain their original brickwork and wrought iron features. Large front yards are surrounded by thick trees, and hilly roads connect Collier Heights’ subdivisions. Homes are priced between the upper $100,000s and the low $400,000s. "There are a lot of properties in Collier Heights that are renovated, but not everything is flipped," says Realtor Jeremiah Keith with Keller Williams Realty West Atlanta, who was raised in Collier Heights. "People are drawn to it because it's a charming, beautiful neighborhood that's a testament to its history."

How residents work to protect the area's historic character

Collier Heights residents continue the neighborhood's efforts to support Atlanta's Black community. While investors are eyeing Collier Heights because of lower prices and proximity to Downtown Atlanta, many residents are trying to keep their homes in their families. The city also has policies designed to preserve home exteriors, including rules against painting brick. Potential buyers should note these rules, as agents are not required to disclose them.

Where residents find food, services and shopping

Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway is home to local business, restaurants and churches, like soul food and chicken spots A1 Soulfood and Ameen Fish and Wings. On the other side of Collier Heights, The Bando on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive provides more than just soul food. In addition to cooking up signature lemon- and parmesan-coated wings, The Bando team runs its own food-focused TV channel and offers a youth mentoring program. Within the neighborhood, there are family-owned grocery stores like the Buy Low Super Market on James Jackson Parkway, but just 2 miles away is the larger Wayfield Foods on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Small strip malls with retail businesses and services are near Collier Heights, but Atlanta offers large retail districts, including downtown’s Peachtree Center and Midtown’s Ponce City Market.
