Deerwood is a small community in southwest Atlanta, just west of Interstate 285. Many residents have lived here for years, working in or even starting the businesses that line the surrounding streets. “Everybody knows everybody,” says Anthony Johnson, a manager at Ben Hill Grill and a longtime southwest Atlanta local. “Ben Hill Park is a big part of the community. It’s where kids play football, sporting events happen, and local radio stations host events." Deerwood is zoned for schools with an International Baccalaureate program and is just a short drive from parks and recreation centers. Downtown Atlanta is less than 12 miles away, and Fairburn is just as close, so major employers in both directions are within easy reach.

Nearby Ben Hill Park and Cascade Springs Nature Preserve

The William Walker Recreation Center is an area focal point, offering year-round youth sports like track and field, football and basketball. Deerwood is primarily residential, with restaurants and shops a short drive away. Across from Greenbriar Animal Hospital, Ben Hill Grill serves Philly cheesesteaks, burgers and wings in a homey atmosphere. “We are locally owned,” Johnson says. “We get a lot of regulars. Even though we’re takeout, we always have sports on TV and love hanging out with customers.” On the same stretch of road, Bamba Cuisine specializes in West African stews and Big Daddy’s Kitchen near Greenbriar Mall and Kroger stocks fresh-squeezed peach and strawberry lemonade and serves Southern comfort foods. Camp Creek Marketplace is 5 miles away and features over 100 stores, including Target, PetSmart and other national retailers.
