Hippie vibe stays alive in family-friendly Lake Claire
Quiet sidewalks shaded by vibrant, mature canopies make it easy to forget that Lake Claire is within city limits. “A lot of people move there because they want that in-town feel, but they still want the luxury homes,” says Juli St George, a seasoned Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Intown. She adds that this leafy community, situated just 5 miles from Atlanta, is a draw to homebuyers for the good schools, private pool and the area’s many parks. Residents can also escape the city atmosphere at the Lake Claire Community Land Trust, a park where an amphitheater surrounding a firepit hosts monthly drum circles. A proposed highway in the 1980s threatened this urban utopia, but residents’ efforts prevented construction. “And the area has only gotten more popular. We like to think we’ve kept a bit of our hippie vibe while we continue to be a very popular neighborhood for new young families,” says Nancy Dorsner, a neighborhood association committee member.
The Lake Claire Community Land Trust also has a firepit and amphitheater.

Peace Pond nature trails and a playground at Lake Claire Park
The Lake Claire Community Land Trust, a plot of previously littered, kudzu-covered land off Arizona Avenue, is now a haven for neighbors to appreciate community, nature and the arts. A trail around Peace Pond meanders by cranes, turtles and goats. There’s even a sweat lodge. Atop Sunset Overlook, a view of Atlanta’s skyline rises in the west. Art scattered about the landscape ranges from decorative hearts and a “spread goodness sign” to a small obelisk reminding visitors it “marks the exact center of the known universe.” Lake Claire Park, centrally located in a heavily wooded area, has a playground with multiple climbing structures and an open grassy area just right for a game of soccer. The recently renovated park also includes a tennis and pickleball court. Across Ponce De Leon Avenue, Deepdene Park attracts joggers and dog walkers to its mile-long trail with a vibrant canopy stretching over stone bridges. It is part of a network of area parks designed by famed Central Park architect Frederick Law Olmsted. “Everybody walks, and their kids ride bikes. It’s a little bit of a tucked-away neighborhood within city limits,” says former resident Shannon Turner, a Realtor with eXp Realty. Candler Park, a mile to the west, features a public pool and a nine-hole golf course.
