Lakewood is a changing community making use of expanding Atlanta Beltline
As the Atlanta Beltline continues its expansion south, the Lakewood neighborhood is starting to change. The Beltline is a trail system built along a former railway corridor that connects many of the city’s neighborhoods and parks. As a major Atlanta attraction, the Beltline also brings art, events and revitalization. “There’s a lot of buildings that have been held on to, that were purchased a while ago, that people have just been holding for the turn,” says Monique Fair, associate broker with Realty ONE Group Terminus. Now, homes that have been boarded up for years are being renovated and turned into short-term rentals or other “income-producing properties.” Fair says the city is also giving out grants to bring in more business to the area. “There is a lot more activity than there was before."
An example of one of the many are many homes being remodeled throughout the Lakewood neighborhood.
Residents of Lakewood are excited to discover that they can easily access the beautifully paved section of the Beltline, nearby in the Pittsburgh neighborhood.

Playgrounds, a dog park and a community garden
Tullwater Park is a small park with a playground in the neighborhood's southeastern corner. Lakewood also has some community gardens, including the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill. The site produces fruits and vegetables that are free for residents. “I go almost every year and get the plums,” Fair says. “They have the best, the sweetest plums. You can just walk up and get what you need.”
