An Atlanta neighborhood built by the railroad
After the Civil War, train mechanics settled near the rail yards on the south side of Atlanta, giving birth to the Mechanicsville neighborhood. While early residents moved in just to find work, Mechanicsville became a home for generations of Atlantans, says Nakita Head, an Atlanta native and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “There are people who live in that neighborhood whose great-grandparents lived there. There are people who played little league baseball at the park, and now they’re coaching there.” Despite its long history, Mechanicsville’s trajectory hasn’t been straightforward. Like the railroad tracks that slice through Atlanta, there have been bends and turns in the forms of traffic re-routes away from the neighborhood, business closures and depopulation. However, the allure of the nearby Summerhill neighborhood draws a new generation of residents to Mechanicsville, Head adds. “The people moving there are people who enjoy walkability. They can walk to Publix and all the cute boutique shops and restaurants in Summerhill.”

Sweets and sandwiches on the menu at Hero
The Summerhill neighborhood next door is better known for shops and eateries. Locals can stop in for banana pudding doughnuts in the morning and fried chicken sandwiches on their lunch breaks. A walk down Summerhill’s Georgia Avenue reveals an assortment of restaurants and boutiques, as well as Halfway Crooks Beer. In Mechanicsville, Family Dollar provides a spot for residents to pick up pantry staples. For meats, produce and other groceries, residents can head less than a mile to the Publix in Summerhill. The nearest hospital is Grady Memorial Hospital, 2 miles away in downtown Atlanta.

Mechanicsville housing market mixes the old and the new
The neighborhood contains many historical cottages and traditional homes. Older homes usually retain original features such as hardwood floors and fireplace mantles. Modernist townhouses are being constructed as well, offering perks such as rooftop decks with views of downtown Atlanta. One-bedroom condo prices begin in the mid-$100,000s, with single-family houses starting in the mid-$300,000s. “Those prices are turnkey, you don’t have to do any renovations,” Head says. “It’s affordable for the city.” Newly built townhouses fetch as much as $600,000.

The Atlanta Fair: A 50-year-old tradition
In the spring and fall, the Atlanta Fair sets up in the neighborhood. “I’ve been going there since I was a kid,” Head recalls. “It’s a tradition there. There are rides, cotton candy, funnel cakes. It’s a big deal for city people.” The fair has been around for more than 50 years, drawing folks to its twirling attractions, deep-fried confections and midway games.

Bordering Interstates 85 and 20
Because Mechanicsville is bordered by Interstate 85 and Interstate 20, it’s simple to reach downtown or any part of the city. In fact, Head says Mechanicsville’s location is one of its advantages, adding that within 10 minutes, a resident can drive to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Lenox Square mall and Zoo Atlanta, Head says. Half a mile west of the neighborhood, the MARTA commuter rail stops at the West End station, taking passengers to destinations such as the airport and downtown.
Just south west of the I-85/I-75 and I-20 connector, Mechanicsville is ideally located.

I have experience much violence. Gun violence is one of them. The arguments that leads to a shoot out is very upsetting. But the neighborhood is getting better with gentrification.
