Monroe Heights
Neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia
Fulton County 30318
Public transportation through the James Jackson Parkway
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority has multiple bus stops along Northwest Drive that link the neighborhood to local schools and the Hamilton E. Holmes Station 4 miles south. The blue rail line connects to the Five Points Station 5 miles east, which leads to red and gold rail lines that run to the 24-hour Piedmont emergency center 5 miles north. It also runs 10 miles south to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.Super Valu shopping
There’s very little shopping and dining near the neighborhood. The closest grocery store is 2 miles south in the Super Valu Buy-Low Supermarket and is accessible via the bus. Otherwise, residents will have to use public transportation to access more retail options 8 miles north across the interstate. “If you’re going to do any shopping and dining, you’re going to have to take a trip north up James Jackson Parkway,” Sumlin says. “They have several restaurants across 285 in the city of Smyrna.”Historic houses and new townhome developments
Most ranch-style houses in the neighborhood were built in the 1950s and cost between $300,000 to $400,000. Many of the townhomes that cost between $400,000 to $500,000 were recently built in the 2020s, and Stanley Martin is overseeing new construction at the Westside Bend development. Sumlin says a land developer is in the early stages of planning a smaller townhome development along Northwest Drive. Brick exterior houses built in the 2000s have quarter-acre lots and prices ranging between $500,000 and $580,000. 12th & James has spacious apartments that cost between $1,800 and $2,200, while Populus Westside has studio and three-bedroom apartments that run between $1,400 and $3,500 a month.Local schools named after civil rights leaders
Scott Elementary is named after a local Baptist minister who donated the property to the public school district. It has a C on Niche. John Lewis Invictus Academy emphasizes a project-based learning environment and earned a C-minus. Douglass High School is a STEAM-focused institution and also earned a C. The Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy is an all-girls school at the southern border of the neighborhood and earned a B-minus.Environmental factors
The CAP Index crime score is 6 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4 with high scores for some violent crimes. The west end is noisiest by the highway, and flooding can occur around the northern end by the creek.Recently renovated parks and recreational centers
While Sumlin says the neighborhood parks have been historically neglected, Monroe Heights’ parks recently got a fresh makeover that introduced the community to new amenities. English Park sits a mile west and has the closest playground with a tennis court and a football field, while Lillian Cooper Shepard Park is 2 miles northeast past Proctor Creek and has basketball courts with a walking trail. The A.D. Williams Recreation Center is half a mile south and is mainly used by the Atlanta Police Athletic League for youth sporting events.
