The many generations that live in Monroe Heights
Monroe Heights has gone through some changes in the past few decades. In the 1960s, it was a residential neighborhood where homeowners invested in their houses and each other. Today, investments look a little different with the arrival of new apartments and townhome developments, shifting the demographics towards having more renters in the community. While revitalization efforts are ongoing, people in Monroe Heights continue to hold onto their homes as they’re passed from one generation to the next. “People have been in that neighborhood for 30 to 40 years,” NPU-G chairperson Torrey Sumlin says. “As those people pass on, their grandchildren have the option to move into the home or sell the property. Some of them aren’t interested in either one and the property just sits there, so it opens up an opportunity for developers to come in and revitalize the neighborhood.”
New apartment developments are providing fresh housing opportunities while boosting the neighborhood's appeal to renters and newcomers.
Dense housing developments highlights how Monroe Heights is becoing a hotspot for compact yet comfortable living in a suburban-like setting.

It also runs 10 miles south to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Historic houses and new townhome developments
Most ranch-style houses in the neighborhood were built in the 1950s and cost between $300,000 to $400,000. Many of the townhomes that cost between $400,000 to $500,000 were recently built in the 2020s, and Stanley Martin is overseeing new construction at the Westside Bend development. Sumlin says a land developer is in the early stages of planning a smaller townhome development along Northwest Drive. Brick exterior houses built in the 2000s have quarter-acre lots and prices ranging between $500,000 and $580,000. 12th & James has spacious apartments that cost between $1,800 and $2,200, while Populus Westside has studio and three-bedroom apartments that run between $1,400 and $3,500 a month.
Updated townhomes shows Monroe Heights' push toward revitalization, attracting young professionals looking for affordability within city limits.
Modest mid-century homes with generous yards continue to provide affordable housing options for long-term residents and first-time home buyers.

Super Valu shopping
There’s very little shopping and dining near the neighborhood. The closest grocery store is 2 miles south in the Super Valu Buy-Low Supermarket and is accessible via the bus. Otherwise, residents will have to use public transportation to access more retail options 8 miles north across the interstate. “If you’re going to do any shopping and dining, you’re going to have to take a trip north up James Jackson Parkway,” Sumlin says. “They have several restaurants across 285 in the city of Smyrna.”

Recently renovated parks and recreational centers

The A.D. Williams Recreation Center is half a mile south and is mainly used by the Atlanta Police Athletic League for youth sporting events.
