Historic cemetery anchors unique neighborhood
Life looks different in Norwood Manor compared to surrounding neighborhoods. Not only is it located south of the FCI Atlanta correctional facility, which holds over 1,800 inmates, but it’s also home to South-View Cemetery, a 100-acre historical burial site that houses thousands of people from the Civil Rights era. Serving as the final resting place for figures such as John Lewis and members of Martin Luther King Jr.’s family, South-View Cemetery reminds its over 900 residents of Atlanta’s long journey toward equality. “Everything that happened in Atlanta since 1886, somebody is buried here that represents that,” cemetery association president Winifred “Winnie” Hemphill says. “Things that happened in Atlanta end up in South-View.”

Historical housing tied to South-View Cemetery
South-View Cemetery pre-dates the neighborhood itself, founded in 1886 long before the first houses started going up in the 1940s. “It was initially farmland in the 1800s, and in the 60s, it was a predominately lower-income area,” Hemphill says. “The area around the cemetery has certainly changed over that time.” Today, homes are clustered around the central and southeastern zones, with traditional, cape cod and ranch-style houses costing anywhere between $140,000 and $300,000.

South Bend Park 2 miles west is slightly further away, but it’s worth the extra effort with amenities such as a skate park, a dog park and three different playgrounds. Plus, in the fall, Lakewood Stadium hosts high school football games.
