Historic Southwest community near Atlanta Westside BeltLine Trail
Oakland City is a hub of community-driven initiatives, nature preservation and Black history in Southwest Atlanta. "There's a larger concentration of urban community farms here than in surrounding areas of the city," says Jamila Norman, founder of Patchwork City Farms and hosts of Magnolia Networks' "Homegrown." She highlights Oakland City's history of urban farming, collective efforts born out of necessity, and a direct response to racial discrimination and segregation. Patchwork City Farms continues this legacy of self-sufficiency, focusing on sustainable farming and education for healthy living and hosting a weekly farmers market in the neighborhood.
Oakland City is less than 5 miles from downtown and neighbors Atlanta's historic West End. With the Atlanta Westside BeltLine Trail expanding, the neighborhood attracts a new generation of first-time homeowners. "Oakland City is an area in transition, with the BeltLine running right through a large part of the neighborhood. It's a huge trail connecting communities around Atlanta," says Matthew Baker, Realtor with BHHS Georgia Properties and long-time native.
Oakland City's features many urban farming plots integrated with the neighborhoods.

A history of urban farming and nature preservation in Oakland City
Patchwork City Farms harvests beds of fresh lettuce and herbs in the heart of Oakland City. "I wanted to serve the neighborhood and Southwest Atlanta to bring more food accessibility to the area," Norman says. Established in 2010, the farm uses sustainable practices to grow fresh produce while inviting neighbors to volunteer at monthly cleanups and tree-planting events. Norman emphasizes the nearby Outdoor Activity Center, a 26-acre nature preserve with trails, a treehouse classroom and a community garden stewarded by West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA). This preserve is also the historic site of the Atlanta Black Crackers' baseball field, honoring the city's first Black baseball team. "MLB recently officially recognized the Atlanta Black Crackers as the first baseball team in Atlanta because they predated the Atlanta Braves," Norman says.
The legacy of Black history continues at the Rev. James Orange Park and Recreation Center, named after the civil rights leader who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many of Orange's family members have lived in the neighborhood. The recreation center hosts an after-school program and senior programs. Locals are walkable to the park's splash pad, playground, and basketball courts. A new 1.3-mile connector trail will link Oakland City to the Atlanta BeltLine, offering easier access to nearby parks, retail and attractions in surrounding neighborhoods.

Neighborhood yard sales, cleanups and Farm Fresh Fridays
The Oakland City Community Organization (OCCO) was founded in 1992 and coined the slogan “Re-imagining One Street at a Time." OCCO organizes yard sales, cleanups and beautification projects like placing little free libraries around the neighborhood, including a firetruck-shaped box at nearby Rescue Fire Station 14. Patchwork City Farms also offers a small market in the neighborhood called Farm Fresh Fridays. "Some of our most popular items are tomatoes, cucumbers and all types of lettuce," Norman says.
Nature-centered learning at Finch Elementary
Oakland City is part of Atlanta Public Schools, which has a B grade on Niche, with over 50,000 students enrolled. Finch Elementary has a C grade and is a large part of the community, with neighbors and volunteers joining forces in 2021 to add benches and picnic tables, creating an outdoor classroom. "I did workshops with Finch Elementary. The energy of the school is amazing—it feels happy. We teach kids nutritional recipes and do taste tests," Norman says. "It was cool to see their hesitancy about the veggies, but they always ended up loving it." Sylvan Hills Middle School also has a C grade and offers STEAM Signature Programming, focusing on project-based learning for post-graduation career development. This hands-on approach continues at Carver STEAM Academy, which has a C-minus rating. The academy offers three dual enrollment programs, including Cybersecurity, through a partnership with Atlanta Technical College, allowing students to start the program in 10th grade.
Finch Elementary School receives a C- from Niche and 2 from GreatSchools.

Mixed-use retail near Atlanta Beltline Westside Trail
The Atlanta BeltLine has transformed nearby shopping and dining areas with developments like Lee+White and Murphy Crossing. Announced in March 2024, Murphy Crossing will repurpose old warehouses into a mixed-use space with retail and housing near a new MARTA Rail Station. Just a few blocks away, Lee+White, reimagined in 2021 from Warehouse Row, has become a spot for coffee shops, breweries and restaurants. "As the BeltLine continues to take shape, we're going to see more businesses pop up, including breweries and tech companies," Baker says. For everyday needs, Kroger is on Cascade Avenue.
Lee+White, just minutes from Oakland City, is home to breweries, restaurants, and retail spaces.

Preserved homes line Oakland City Historic District
Generational neighbors have long called Oakland City home, watching the community grow and change. "I like Oakland City. It's on the up-and-up, with pockets of charming 1940s and 1950s bungalows," Baker says. "I've had couples move here wanting to downsize—they like the walkability." Narrow, hilly streets with sidewalks and bike lanes wind through the neighborhood. Modest front yards and porches frame renovated early to mid-20th-century Queen Anne, English Revival and Craftsman bungalows. Oakland City Historic District residents have to follow strict regulations and guidelines, and the OCCO Historic Neighborhood Committee holds meetings throughout the year. New townhome developments include Avenue at Oakland City and The Trust at Oakland City, which are set to deliver 42 units by 2026. Townhome prices range from $250,000 to over $400,000. Single-family homes can range from $125,000 to $425,000 for under 2,000 square feet. Houses are nearing 3,000 square feet and up start at around $450,000 and nearing $700,000 for new construction.
New developments in Oakland City aim to blend modern townhomes with the area’s historic character.

Nearby highways and Oakland City Transit Station
Oakland City Transit Station is less than a mile from James Orange Recreation Center, giving access to Atlanta's MARTA Rapid Transit Red and Gold lines, which leads locals to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Midtown, both under 10 miles. "Many people like the proximity to the airport, so neighborhoods in this southwestern corridor are popular," Baker says. Downtown Atlanta is less than 5 miles away, home to Mercedez Benz Stadium. Nearby Interstate 20 and Interstate 85 are nearby, eventually merging into I-75. Grady Memorial Hospital is also less than 5 miles north.
