Oakland
Recreation at Oakland Cemetery, Grant Park and more
Oakland Cemetery is no ordinary graveyard. Open dawn to dusk, visitors tour gardens adorned with ancient oaks and magnolias, sculptures and, in the spring, thousands of daffodils. Couples can even get married here. Also within the neighborhood are Rawson-Washington Park, which features a playground, large green space, ball fields and a basketball court, and The Georgia State University Soccer Facility, where locals can watch a match.A mile south of the neighborhood is the sprawling 130-acre Grant Park, home to The Atlanta Zoo and The Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum. In the summer, locals flock to Grant Park’s swimming pool or compete on the tennis courts, baseball diamond or basketball courts. It also has numerous grassy areas and a rec center on the corner of Park Avenue and Sydney Street. “It’s one of the largest parks in Atlanta with a large community that supports it,” says Monnier.
Dining on Memorial Drive
“Memorial Drive has had tons of growth,” says Monnier. “Atlanta Dairies is an awesome development where they reclaimed many industrial items on-site when building.” At Atlanta Dairies, a still developing mixed-use community, locals can catch a concert at The Eastern, try experimental beers from Three Taverns Imaginarium, or grab cocktails and Caribbean-inspired food from El Malo. Six Feet Under Pub & Fish House, across from Oakland Cemetery, is another popular option, serving fried food and fish selections. Weather permitting, visitors can enjoy their seafood baskets on a shaded rooftop. The Grant Park Market is a bright, modern neighborhood grocery store within an old warehouse building. Locals can grab produce, wine, beer, florals, and food products to bring home or walk up to the deli counter, order a sandwich and eat it from a long wooden picnic table. For larger grocery trips, there’s Publix.Historic bungalows and modern condos
Oakland buyers can expect small cottages or bungalows in the upper $300,000 to $700,000 range. Four- or five-bedroom Victorian homes, with historic characteristics like stained glass windows, are also common and can reach the millions. New development, most prominently around Memorial Drive, brings apartment and condo options, starting around $450,000.Events at Oakland Cemetery and Grant Park
Oakland Cemetery hosts an onslaught of events throughout the year. During the early months, thousands of daffodils bloom, and visitors wander the grounds, map in hand, attempting to identify various species. “Capturing the Spirit of Oakland is their Halloween event,” says Monnier. “They have actors portray people buried in the cemetery. It’s great for kids; they learn a lot.” Illumine transforms the cemetery during the holiday season, and when the sun sets, light and art displays shine alongside Atlanta’s skyline. Grant Park also has numerous festivities, like The Summer Shade Festival, a two-day arts and music event, and a Sunday farmer’s market from April to December.Renovated high school
Students are zoned for the Atlanta Public School District and can attend Parkside Elementary School, which gets a B-minus from Niche. Then, they can attend King Middle School, which gets a C-plus, before heading to Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School, which Niche gives a B. In 2012, the high school spent nearly $50 million in renovations, building a new auditorium, softball field, classrooms, and a rooftop garden. There are two nearby charter schools – Wesley International Academy and Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School.Getting around Atlanta
“It’s in the center of Atlanta and so convenient,” says Monnier. “It’s connected to The BeltLine, and you can hop on the highway and get to the airport, Buckhead, or Smyrna to see the Braves play in 15 minutes.” The neighborhood is beside the U.S. Interstate 20, U.S. Interstate 24 and U.S. Interstate 85 corridor, near the Georgia Supreme Court. Georgia State University, Grady Memorial Hospital and downtown Atlanta are about one mile northeast. Bus stops around Memorial Drive will take locals throughout the city; however, Oakland’s trendy streets are mostly walkable.
