Located alongside Highway 54, Orchard Knob is an urban community of around 700 people that’s seen a lot of development in recent years. In 1916, little more than a schoolhouse stood in this grassy, rural area in south Atlanta. Today, the neighborhood has seen all kinds of new additions, including 260 homes, community churches, a few towing and tire companies and the Masjid Ash-Shura mosque, which sits on 20 acres in the southeastern end. “Orchard Knob has grown,” mosque founder Amir Faheed Ail Muwwakkil says. “When we first got there, there weren’t even any sidewalks – we put in the first sidewalks in that area.”
The natural canopy surrounding Orchard Knob remains visible even amid growing development in the area.
