Orchard Knob is a growing community in south Atlanta

Located alongside Highway 54, Orchard Knob is an urban community of around 700 people that’s seen a lot of development in recent years. In 1916, little more than a schoolhouse stood in this grassy, rural area in south Atlanta. Today, the neighborhood has seen all kinds of new additions, including 260 homes, community churches, a few towing and tire companies and the Masjid Ash-Shura mosque, which sits on 20 acres in the southeastern end. “Orchard Knob has grown,” mosque founder Amir Faheed Ail Muwwakkil says. “When we first got there, there weren’t even any sidewalks – we put in the first sidewalks in that area.”

A range of housing options at a range of price points

Most houses on the southern end range between traditional and ranch-style, and most list between $150,000 and $300,000. More Craftsman homes are available around Village Creek Drive in the west at a slightly higher price point between $175,000 and $350,000. New townhomes and contemporary houses will be most expensive around the north, costing as much as $625,000, and open land is available for development starting at $100,000 an acre. “Most of the place was wooded in our area,” Muwwakkil says. “Now we have houses costing $500,000 across the north throughout that corridor. You go down another quarter mile, they’ve got another subdivision with houses costing $400,000 and up.”

Elementary school options and after-school enrichment

Orchard Knob has two elementary school options. The closest is Joseph Humphries Elementary School, which was recently renovated in 2021 and earned a C rating on Niche. The other is Heritage Academy, which is 2 miles south and also rated a C. Crawford Long Middle School also earned a C and offers several after-school enrichment programs, while South Atlanta High School serves over 900 students and was rated a C-minus.

MARTA offers public transportation to Atlanta-area destinations

Public transportation is provided by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, which has three routes running through the neighborhood. Between the Jonesboro Road, Cleveland Avenue and Empire Boulevard Routes, Orchard Knob residents are less than 7 miles away from the area’s busiest rail routes, including Lakewood/Fort McPherson, East Point and Five Points Station. These interconnected railways make it simple to travel 10 miles south to the 24-hour Concentra Urgent Care, as well as the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Nearby parks include Atlanta's largest, Southside Park

Less than 2 miles down Jonesboro Road is Southside Park, which is one of the largest parks in Atlanta with over 211 acres. The Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve is about the same distance away and features over 216 acres of oak-hickory forestry. Orchard Knob is also less than a mile from Empire Park, which has its own basketball and tennis courts, and is a mile and a half away from the Brown’s Mill Golf course and its 18 holes along the South River. It’s also easy to get around the neighborhood, with bike lanes running alongside Humphries Drive.

Weather

There is some slight risk of flooding along the northwestern end thanks to the creeks system that comes from the South River.

Crime

Orchard Knob has an overall CAP Index crime score of 6 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. According to the CAP Index, the neighborhood is at a high risk for violent crime and a moderate risk for property crime.
