Suffering from an identity crisis, an area between Midtown and Downtown Atlanta needed a rebrand. So in 2005 SoNo — short for South of North Avenue — took hold.

The catchy name announces its prime location: SoNo is within a mile of some of the top spots in Atlanta, such as the Georgia Aquarium and the Fox Theatre. Most SoNo residents live in contemporary high-rise condos and apartment complexes. Balconies provide a nice touch, and pools and fitness centers offer indoor and outdoor activities.

Enjoy views of Downtown Atlanta or take a short walk to nearby galleries, boutique shops and restaurants. Poor Calvin’s is a SoNo favorite with its standout Asian fusion flair— consider the lobster crawfish wontons or the duck dynasty in siam sauce.

Though SoNo doesn’t include established parks within its boundaries, the 211-acre Piedmont Park is under 2 miles away. Massive festivals, such as the Atlanta Pride Festival, set up shop at the park, but celebration-free days are no less fun: Feed the geese and ducks by the lake, play some tennis or relax in the pool during the summer months. Piedmont Park’s Legacy Fountain features over 70 jets shooting skyward, with the Atlanta skyline in the background.

And the most prominent structure adorning the city’s skyline sits in SoNo. The Bank of America Plaza building boasts distinction as the tallest in Atlanta at an astounding 55 stories.

While there are no public schools within SoNo, older students attend the well-regarded Midtown High School nearby.

Familiar retailers such as Publix Super Market and Walgreens are less than a mile away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
