Historic neighborhood in a great location
Established in 1865, Summerhill is one of Atlanta’s original neighborhoods. Freed slaves and Jewish immigrants transformed the area from a plot of land to one of the city’s most prosperous African American neighborhoods by the early 1900s, with small businesses, schools, places of worship and a small movie theatre. In the early 20th century, as the city expanded to the north and west, wealthy residents moved to areas where they could have larger properties. Thus, Summerhill faced a period of hardship, with vacant homes and storefronts falling into a state of disrepair. In the 1960s, a protest occurred in the neighborhood over the shooting of a Black man by the police, harnessing community action and leading to a neighborhood organization that worked to rebuild Summerhill. In 1996, Summerhill hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games, and Atlanta’s Olympic Cauldron Tower still stands; the Atlanta Braves called the site of the ceremonies home for 20 years. When The Braves left, The Georgia State Panthers came in, and the football team’s Center Parc Stadium became an anchor for the neighborhood, with surrounding shops and restaurants.
Proximity to major highways makes getting around Atlanta convenient, and Summerhill is near multiple parks and dining destinations. “It’s an old historic neighborhood in a great downtown location,” says Allyson Golightly, a Realtor with Compass specializing in the Metro Atlanta market. “They’ve revitalized the area, increased walkability, and brought new restaurants and shops.”

Revitalization near Center Parc Credit Union Stadium
“The area was supported by The Braves stadium previously, but once The Braves moved, Georgia State and Carter – a commercial development company – bought the land and revitalized the area,” says Golightly. “It’s been a big leap." Starting around Center Parc Stadium, trendy eateries run down Georgia Avenue. Locals will recognize Boca, a hip Mexican spot with a sleek outdoor patio, from the colorful murals on its side. Wood's Chapel BBQ, named after a church that served Summerhill after the Civil War, is another great choice. Patrons walk up to an indoor window to order and eat their pulled pork sandwiches from long wooden picnic tables. To eat at home, residents can grab groceries from Publix.

Cheering for Georgia State sports teams and nearby parks
Summerhill’s parks have also benefitted from revitalization efforts, with facility improvements. Phoenix II Park spans 7 acres and offers panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline. There’s a track, a basketball court, a multipurpose field, a playground and picnic areas. Across Georgia Avenue is Phoenix III Park, a large green space that’s a great spot to walk dogs, exercise or have a picnic. For a day of cheering on Georgia State Sports teams, the Georgia State Convocation Center, where the men’s and women’s basketball teams play and Center Parc Stadium are in the neighborhood.
About a mile and a half east of the neighborhood sits sprawling Grant Park, with the Atlanta Zoo and the Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum. Locals can utilize the tennis and basketball courts, baseball diamond, and pool in the summer. It’s also the site of the neighborhood’s rec center, which is on the corner of Park Avenue and Sydney Street. Numerous green spaces with scattered benches at Grant Park are great for relaxing outdoors.

I have lived here going on six years and I can truly say that the area's safety has improved. There used to be many neighborly feuds, people would yell at each other from across the street, there would be fights between people. Like most neighborhoods, there are robberies every once in a while, but the community has become very peaceful and communal. I noticed that more people attend church and the area has less litter.

Summerhill was a great neighborhood. Unfortunately the removal of the braves took down the surrounding neighborhood hood. When the brvea where removed it caused the level of diversity to decline. It also caused the affordability to decline also, and the crime level went up. The schools are great.
