West End
Historic, renovated bungalows on tight lots
Historic homes dating back as far as 1835 sit off tight city streets on elevated front yards in West End. “The neighborhood has a lot of bungalow-style homes, which have been renovated and are trendy among young professionals,” Gargiulo says. Homes often have large porches spanning the front of the house. Renovated homes preserve their original architectural elements and often feature bright exterior paint and updated interiors. Home prices vary based on the property’s condition: a newly renovated, three-bedroom bungalow costs around $495,000, while fixer-uppers in need of major renovations or complete reconstruction start at around $150,000.Important to know: Historic regulations restrict exterior renovations
Homeowners in West End must gain approval from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission (AUDC) before making any alterations or renovations to the exterior of their home. These regulations are intended to preserve the historic buildings and atmosphere in the neighborhood.West End Neighborhood Development and cultural attractions
The West End Neighborhood Development group (WEND) hosts events in West End and helps maintain and preserve the historic neighborhood. Some of the events held by WEND include regular neighborhood cleanups, an annual Easter egg hunt and summer music concerts. Residents will also find plenty of artistic and cultural attractions in the neighborhood. The Hammonds House Museum is inside the former home of Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, a prominent African American physician and patron of the arts. The museum now features over 350 art pieces preserving and celebrating Black and African American history, culture and accomplishments.Students attend Atlanta Public Schools
West End feeds into Atlanta Public Schools, which earned a B overall on Niche. Most children in the neighborhood will attend M.A. Jones Elementary School and Herman J. Russell West End Academy, both with C grades. Older students attend Booker T. Washington High School, which also earned a C. Booker T. Washington High is famous for being the first high school for black students in Atlanta and is a City of Atlanta designated landmark building. Notable alumni of the school include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and The Honorable Judge Romae Turner Powell, Georgia’s first African American woman judge.Parks in West End connect to the Atlanta BeltLine
The city-wide BeltLine project connecting 45 Atlanta neighborhoods has brought parks and walkable trails to West End. Gordan White Park in West End connects to the BeltLine; the park itself is a small triangle with landscaping and places to sit, as well as a Relay Bike Share Station. Locals will also find mile marker “zero” of the BeltLine at Rose Circle Park. The 2.4-mile trail between Rose Circle Park and Gordan White Park was the first completed stretch of the 22-mile loop around Atlanta. The neighborhood also has several small parks with basic amenities like playgrounds and basketball courts, including Adair Park and West End Park.Shopping and dining at Lee + White
West End locals have plenty of options for shopping and dining nearby. For lunch, locals can head to Rodney Scott’s BBQ Atlanta or grab a slice at the local Slim & Husky’s Pizza. Lee + White Food Hall, which opened in June 2023, is a newly converted warehouse district that is now home to over a dozen eateries and locally owned shops. For groceries, locals can visit the Kroger on Cascade Avenue SW or a number of small grocery shops and markets.Interstates and a MARTA station in the neighborhood
Interstate 20 travels through West End and takes locals further into Downtown Atlanta. Locals can skip the traffic and hop onto a train at the West End Marta Station. The neighborhood is also home to numerous bus routes at the station and the Gold Line, which runs north and south throughout the city.
